Chapter: Nine Formulas for Gu Poison with Hematochezia
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
The etiology of "Gu" involves gathering various insects and snakes into a vessel, allowing them to devour each other until only one survives. This survivor is termed "Gu," which can transform into poison to harm humans. If a person is subjected to such poisoning, it often occurs through ingestion via food or drink. Upon contracting Gu poison, the patient experiences severe distress and pain in the heart and abdomen that is unbearable. The poison attacks the five Zang organs, leading to the passage of dark, clotted blood resembling rotten chicken liver. (From Volume 25)
**Duanju's Zhizhu San Formula for Treating Gu Poison with Abdominal Pain and Passage of Red Blood**
* *Adonis amurensis* (Yangzhizhu, toxic), Dried Ginger, Veratrum (roasted), Aconite Root (processed), Croton Seed (skin and heart removed, roasted), Wild Kudzu Bark, Cinnamon Twig, Cinnabar (ground), Realgar (ground), Centipede (roasted). Each ingredient is used in equal parts (one fen).
Crush these ten ingredients into a powder. Administer one Dao Gui (a traditional Chinese unit of measure) with water. If ineffective, increase the dose by one millet grain. Avoid pork, reed shoots, raw blood products, raw green onions, and civet meat. (Consistent with *Gujin Luyan*)
**Another Formula for Treating Fatal Hematochezia due to Gu Poison**
* Rose Root (crushed, one sheng), Achyranthes Bidentata Root (five liang), Forsythia Fruit (one sheng), Animal Fat (approximately the size of a pellet).
Chop these four ingredients. Boil in four sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses for cure. (Consistent with *Gujin Luyan*)
**Another Formula for Various Gu Poisons Causing Frequent Hematochezia (Dozens of Times Daily)**
* Croton Seed (fourteen seeds), Veratrum (roasted), Aconite Root (processed), Blister Beetle (legs and wings removed, roasted), Alum (two fen each, boiled until liquid evaporates).
Pulverize these five ingredients and sieve them separately. Grind the Croton Seeds into a paste. Mix thoroughly. Wrap a portion the size of a soybean in cotton and insert it into the anus. Use two to three times daily for cure. Dietary restrictions are the same as the previous formula. (Consistent with *Qianjin Fang* and *Gujin Luyan*, from Volume 4)
According to *Qianjin Fang*, if sudden hematochezia worsens after using the above formulas, it indicates Gu poisoning. The blood resembles duck liver, and there is severe, urgent abdominal cramping. This formula treats such conditions.
* Qian Gen (Madder Root), Cimicifuga Rhizome, Rhino Horn (each three liang), Sanguisorba Officinalis Root, White Lotus Root (each four liang), Platycodon Root, Phellodendron Bark, Scutellaria Root (each one liang).
Chop these eight ingredients. Boil in nine sheng of water until two and a half sheng remain. Divide into three doses.
Furthermore, any sudden onset of bloody dysentery, regardless of color (red or black) or volume, is caused by Gu poison. Incompetent physicians who treat this merely as ordinary dysentery are greatly mistaken.
**Another Formula for Gu Poison Causing Hematemesis and Hematochezia Resembling Rotten Chicken Liver, with Severe Abdominal Cramping Sensation as if Being Gnawed**
If not treated immediately, this leads to death due to damage to the five Zang organs. To verify Gu poisoning: have the patient spit into water. If the saliva sinks, it is Gu; if it floats, it is not.
Formula:
* White bark from the north-facing side of Oak Wood, Peach Root Bark, [Missing Ingredient] (roasted, one cun-bi), Ash of Tangled Hair (one cun-bi), Hemp Seed Juice (five sheng).
Boil the Oak Bark and Peach Root first to obtain one sheng of concentrated decoction. Mix with Hemp Seed Juice, Ash of Tangled Hair, and the powdered missing ingredient. Have the patient eat a small amount, then administer one sheng in the morning. Shortly after, place water in a basin and stir with a chicken feather. The patient will vomit substances resembling oxen's saliva, calf placentas, and various Gu toxins. (From Volume 25)
**Qianjin Yifang Formula for Gu Poison with Hematochezia**
Burn [Missing Ingredient] to ash. Administer one cun-bi with water. The patient should vomit up the Gu poison. (From Volume 15)
**Cui Shi's Lingyang Pi Decoction for Gu Poison with Hematochezia and Descending Toxicity**
* Antelope Skin (3-inch square, roasted), Lotus Root, Sophora Root, Coptis Rhizome (each two liang), Angelica Sinensis, Cimicifuga Rhizome, Rhino Horn (each three liang).
Chop these seven ingredients. Boil in nine sheng of water until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. If Lotus Root is unavailable, substitute with Madder Root.
**Another Formula for Gu Poison Causing Uncontrollable Hematochezia Day and Night with Unbearable Abdominal Pain**
Take four or five white lotus leaves and secretly place them under the mat where the patient sleeps, without the patient's knowledge. If injured by Gu poison, the patient will refuse to sleep on it, confirming Gu poisoning. Use three stalks of Soap Bean, roast them, remove skin and seeds, and crush them. Soak in four sheng of strong vinegar in a porcelain vessel... (Text fragment ends here, implying administration at noon).
**Gujin Luyan Formula for Sudden Gu Poison with Hematochezia Resembling Chicken Liver, Profuse Bleeding (Several Shi Daily), Damage to Four Zang Organs, Preserved Heart, or Nasal Hemorrhage Imminent Death**
Pulverize Platycodon Root. Administer one cun-bi with wine, three times daily. If unable to swallow, pry open the mouth and pour it in. The patient may feel mental restlessness initially, which will subside shortly. Subsequently, Gu toxins will be expelled. Continue treatment for seven days. Consume pig liver afterward to tonify the body. (From Volume 4)
