The *Shuoyuan* (Source of Diseases) states that *Shaichong* (Enterobius vermicularis, pinworm) is one of the nine types of parasites. Its shape is very small, resembling modern "wochong" (a type of worm). It arises due to the weakness of the *Zangfu* organs (viscera and bowels). In severe cases, it can lead to hemorrhoids, scabies, tinea, leprosy-like conditions, carbuncles, ulcers, and various sores. Shaichong acts only when the human body is extremely weak; once activated, it causes all sorts of disorders.
(From Fan Wang's prescription for treating Shaichong: Yuanhua San.)
Yuanhua (Genkwa Flos), Yelangya (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Leiwuan (Wanlongia Semen), Taoren (Persicae Semen, skin and tip removed).
The above four herbs are pounded into a powder. Do not eat the night before. In the morning on an empty stomach, take one *fangcunbi* (a traditional Chinese measuring spoon, approx. 3-5g) with water. The worms should be expelled.
Another prescription is Badou Baigao (Croton Bai Paste) for treating Shaichong.
Badou (Crotonis Fructus, one seed, roasted until smoke ceases, heart and skin removed), Taoren (Persicae Semen, four seeds, roasted until black, skin removed).
The above two herbs are combined and pounded into three pills. Adults take all pills in the morning on an empty stomach with "jiangshui" (fermented grain liquid). Children take one pill. If no expulsion occurs, prepare and take another dose the next morning.
(All from Volume 19.)
Qianjin Fang's prescription for Shaichong residing in the stomach, which gradually causes emaciation.
Chunjie (Pure wine), Baimi (White honey), Haoqi (Good lacquer/resin) (one sheng each).
The above three ingredients are placed in a copper vessel and simmered over low heat until they can be formed into pills. Make one pill the size of a peach pit. Do not eat the night before. Take on an empty stomach with warm wine. If the worms are not expelled, take another dose. (Same as in Zubhou Beiji Jiyi and Fan Wang's works, from Volume 18.)
Beiji Fang by Ge Shi for treating Shaichong attacking the heart like stinging, with vomiting of clear fluid.
Crush fresh Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) to extract juice. Do not eat the night before. In the morning, chew a slice of dried meat so that the worms smell the fragrance, then drink one sheng of the juice. The Shaichong should be expelled. (Beiji Wenzhong and Zubhou Beiji also record this, stating it treats Hui Chong/Ascaris.)
Tao Shi's prescription for treating parasites.
Take Tribulus seeds harvested on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, dry them in the shade, and burn them to ash. Take one *fangcunbi* before eating. One dose lasts for three days. (Same as in Fan Wang and Qianjin Fang.)
Another prescription:
Take two liang of fine salt powder and half a sheng of pure wine. Boil in a copper vessel until it boils several times. Do not eat the night before. In the morning, take the warm decoction on an empty stomach in one go. (Same as in Beiji Wenzhong, Qianjin Fang, and Fan Wang's works, from Volume 7.)
