*Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats *Qu Niao* (a type of stinging insect/bite) injury: Once bitten by this insect, illness ensues. The symptoms manifest as sudden pain in a specific area of the body, feeling like being pricked by a thorn or stung by a venomous insect. Subsequently, small red swellings appear, clustering into shapes resembling cornel fruit (*Zhu Yu*), with red edges and a white pus head in the center, sized like millet grains. This also causes tightness of the skin and flesh, accompanied by aversion to cold and high fever. In severe cases, the lesions spread across the waist, hypochondrium, and chest. The treatment method is: immediately upon being bitten, grind rhinoceros horn (*Xi Jiao*) and apply it to the site to detoxify. The therapeutic principle follows that for *Huo Dan* (Fire Carbuncle/Cellulitis). I contracted this disease in the sixth month of the Wude era; after five or six days, I felt mental oppression and malaise. Other treatments failed. A friend advised me to draw the shape of the *Qu Niao* insect on the ground and carefully carve out its intestinal contents with a knife to treat the condition.
Another prescription: Burn *Ling Yang Xu* (Antelope Horn) to ash, mix with lard from the twelfth lunar month, and apply to the affected area until healed.
Another prescription for *Qu Niao* bites:
Chew fresh pear leaves thoroughly and apply to the wound; replace when dry.
Another prescription:
Mash fresh *Ma Bian Cao* (Verbena officinalis) and apply; replace when dry until healed.
*Guangji Fang* (Prescriptions from Guangji) for *Qu Niao* bites encircling the waist causing severe distress:
Boil an old rush fan in water and apply the juice topically.
Another prescription:
Mash *Bian Dou Ye* (Lablab Leaf) and apply. (All cited from Volume X)
*Shenshi Fang* (Prescriptions from Master Shen) for *Qu Niao* bites:
Take soil from a magpie's nest and mix with vinegar (*Ku Jiu*, i.e., black vinegar) to apply topically.
Another prescription:
Apply egg white (*Ji Zi Bai*). If the lesion spreads and exudes fluid, grind garlic and apply like ink; another method uses *Hu Fen* (Lead Carbonate/White Lead); another uses lard (*Zhu Gao*); alternatively, burn rush ash and apply. (All cited from Volume 29)
*Jiyan Fang* (Verified Prescriptions) for *Qu Niao* bite ulcers:
Burn deer horn (*Lu Jiao*), grind into powder, and mix with vinegar for topical application. If exudate is present, burn ash from old rush mats found by the roadside and apply. (*Shenshi Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, and Yi Wen Zhong record the same).
Another prescription:
*Huai Bai Pi* (Phellodendron Bark, half jin, sliced), *Ku Jiu* (Vinegar, two sheng).
Soak these two ingredients for half a day. Scrape off necrotic tissue from the ulcer and wash with the solution, five to six times daily. Finally, mix *Chi Xiao Dou* (Adzuki Bean) powder with vinegar and apply; change when dry. For children, mixing with water is very effective. (*Qianjin Fang*, Yi Wen Zhong, and *Shenshi Fang* record the same).
Another prescription:
Chew barley and apply to the site, three times daily. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*).
Another prescription:
Mix lard with soil from a swallow's nest and apply. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*, cited from Volume 9).
*Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions) for *Qu Niao* bite ulcers:
Take soil from under the eastern-growing roots of cornel (*Zhu Yu*), mix with vinegar, and apply.
Another prescription for ulcers where surface and depth are equivalent, also known as *Qin Yin Chuang* (Spreading Ulcer/Eczema):
Take aged pig jawbone (*Zhu Ya Che Gu*), crush it, and burn until oil exudes. Apply while hot. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*).
Another prescription:
Burn branches or bark of the Chinaberry tree (*Lian Mu*) to ash and apply. For dry lesions, mix with lard. Both treat pediatric alopecia and various malignant ulcers. (Same as *Shenshi Fang*, cited from Volume 24).
Cui Shi’s prescription for *Qu Niao* bites where yellow fluid oozes continuously:
Crush leeks (*Jiu Cai*) to extract juice and apply.
Another prescription:
Wash with decoction of licorice root (*Gan Cao Tang*).
Another prescription:
Chew cinnamon twig (*Gui*) and apply.
Another prescription:
Squeeze juice from horse manure (*Ma Shi*) and wash the area.
Another prescription:
Chew hemp seeds (*Ma Zi*) and apply.
Another prescription:
Have the patient stand in the sun. Boil water nearby and use the steam to fumigate the patient's shadow, directing the heat onto the lesion site six or seven times. Then, have someone chew garlic thoroughly and blow towards the patient's shadow. The residual garlic vapor is believed to cure the patient's ulcer. (All cited from Volume 5).
Emergency prescription for *Qu Niao* bites:
Mix swallow nest material with strong vinegar and apply. Highly effective (cited from Volume 5).
Three prescriptions for treating *E Hao* (Severe Malignant Ulcer/Gangrene):
*Bixiao Fang* (Effective Prescriptions) for *E Hao* with severe swelling:
Slice one sheng of chinaberry root and bark, add three sheng of water, and boil down to two sheng. Wash the ulcer at a comfortable temperature, changing when cool. Repeat multiple times until healed.
Another prescription for *E Hao* with severe swelling and ulceration:
Dried ginger (*Gan Jiang*), Mercury (*Shui Yin*), Lard (*Zhu Zhi*, from the twelfth lunar month).
Rub these three ingredients together until mixed. Place in a nine-holed bowl and burn. Use a bamboo tube to fumigate the swollen area. Before fumigation, puncture two spots on the skin, then fumigate until healed.
Another prescription:
Roast green onion (*Hu Cong*) in charcoal until soft. Remove, break through paper wrapping with hands, and apply to the ulcer. Continue until pain subsides. (Li Rao used this frequently with miraculous effect; cited from Volume 16).
