Xu Renze said: This disease has several types. Some cases arise from the downward flow of fluid-retaining qi, leading to Hongjiaojiao (Hongjiaojiao, a condition characterized by swelling and pain in the lower limbs, often associated with edema). Other cases occur when kidney qi is initially deficient; during the hot summer months, washing feet with cold water prevents dampness from dissipating, also resulting in Hongjiaojiao. Still other cases happen when kidney qi is already deficient, daily activities are not regulated, and one resides in low-lying, damp places, causing dampness to rush upward, which also leads to Hongjiaojiao.
[Text fragment indicating symptoms or treatment intent: Back fullness, abdominal discomfort treated by decoction.]
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 2 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 5 liang), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi, 3 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 2 liang), Arecae Semen (Dabinglang, 10 pieces).
Cut the above herbs. Boil in 7 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Strain out the dregs. Divide into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be approximately the time it takes for a person to walk seven or eight li. If symptoms improve after one dose, taking another dose is acceptable. After taking the decoction, observe dietary and lifestyle restrictions for three to four days, then take the following pill made from ten ingredients including Morus Radix Cortex (Sangbaipi). Avoid raw green onions.
Another prescription:
Morus Radix Cortex (Sangbaipi, 5 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, cut into flakes, 6 liang), Zanthoxyli Fructus (Shujiao, processed to remove oil/sweat), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma, 4 liang), Schisandrae Fructus (Wuweizi, 4 liang).
Pound and sieve the above herbs. Mix with honey to form pills. Swallow with water. Initially take 15 pills, twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage to 30 pills. The pills should be sized like Sophora japonica seeds (Wutongzi). If feeling heat, take before meals; if feeling cold, take after meals.
Dietary restrictions are the same as above. (Note: The dosages for Shujiao and Guixin were not originally specified.)
Furthermore, after September, it is appropriate to prepare a medicinal wine using Fuzi Lateralis Radix Preparata (Cezi) and nine other ingredients, taken concurrently with the following pill formula.
Fuzi Lateralis Radix Preparata (Cezi, 5 liang), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang, 8 liang), Morus Radix Cortex (Sangbaipi, 8 liang), Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 4 liang), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, 8 liang), Acanthopanacis Cortex (Wujiapi, 6 liang), Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Danshen, 6 liang), Dipsaci Radix (Xuduan, 5 liang), Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix (Niuxi, 5 liang), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 4 liang).
Cut the above herbs and place them in a silk bag. Soak in 5 sheng of unadulterated wine for five to six days. Initially take an amount equivalent to the yolk of one chicken egg, twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage until therapeutic effects are observed.
