Although the symptoms of Hongkangjiao (Jiaqi disease, often corresponding to beriberi or gout in modern medicine) may subside, pulse diagnosis requires careful attention. The pulses at the Cun, Guan, and Chi positions must not violate the laws of the Four Seasons (the physiological changes associated with Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) to be considered auspicious; if they violate these laws, treatment should be avoided. Other details are as described in *Mai Jing* (Classic of Pulse Diagnosis) and are not repeated here. Patients who are naturally dark-skinned and thin are easier to cure, while those who are naturally obese with thick flesh and reddish-white skin are difficult to heal. Dark-skinned individuals tolerate wind-dampness, whereas those with red complexions do not tolerate wind.
There are cases where a person has suffered from Hongkangjiao for a long time without realizing it, only to have it triggered by another illness later, which is then cured through treatment. Subsequently, vomiting occurs accompanied by weakness in the legs. Upon examination, I diagnosed it as Hongkangjiao. The patient said, "I have never had swollen feet in my life; why call it Hongkangjiao?" and refused to take decoctions. I recorded this case on stone to warn against hesitation and numbness (Bu Ren).
Patients with Hongkangjiao must strictly abstain from sexual activity and avoid consuming mutton, beef, fish, garlic, Houttuynia cordata (Zhe Cai), Chinese cabbage (Song Cai), Vitex fruit (Man Jing Zi), gourd (Hu Zi), alcohol, wheat products, butter, milk gruel, pork, chicken, goose, and duck. Although some formulas use carp heads, all the aforementioned foods are strictly prohibited. One must also avoid extreme anger. Permitted foods include japonica rice, sorghum, millet, soybean paste, fermented soybeans, green onion, leek, wild garlic (Xie), pepper, ginger, and tangerine peel.
Many patients die prematurely due to Hongkangjiao. Briefly, there are three causes of death: 1. Late recognition of the injury; 2. Arrogance and indulgence; 3. Indecision and doubt. These three attitudes lead to fatal outcomes. Even with excellent physicians, few patients possess the wisdom to accept treatment. Thus, even if one has a thoroughbred (metaphor for a skilled doctor), without a Bo Le (metaphor for an understanding patient)... [Text fragmentary]. Regarding etiology, Hongkangjiao is caused by the invasion of Wind-Toxin. Patients often do not notice it immediately; it may appear suddenly without prior illness, or follow other diseases... [Text fragmentary]. If pain is accompanied by downward flow... [Text fragmentary]. If it enters the abdomen, rapid treatment is required. A floating, large, and slow pulse indicates... [Text fragmentary]. A faint and weak pulse indicates... [Text fragmentary]. Medication should be adjusted according to cold and heat patterns... [Text fragmentary]. A deep, fine, and rapid pulse... Wu Shi privately studied the Hongkangjiao formulas of Su Changshi, Tang Shizhong, and Prince Xu, who suffered from the disease for 20-30 years and documented their experiences logically. Specific acupuncture points are listed... [Text fragmentary].
Su Changshi states: Hongkangjiao originates from Kidney deficiency and mostly affects those with abundant flesh. Regardless of gender, thin individuals who labor and have tight, dense skin will rarely die from it. After recovery, one must not stand for long periods in damp places, drink excessively, eat wheat products, or become emotionally distressed. There are also cases without swelling but with weakness, sudden falling when walking, progressing to numbness, where toxin attacks the Yin and Heart, leading to death. Emergency measures... [Text fragmentary]. Then the general term for slow wind-toxin is established. Recent physicians rely on *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve), which is somewhat detailed, though brief. *Ji Yan Fang* follows Hu Qia and Tao Hongjing's summaries, lacking personal experience... [Text fragmentary]. Now briefly describing several types of the disease with different manifestations. One person suffered for 30 years with multiple relapses... [Text fragmentary]. Changes within ten days vary, making deep understanding difficult, often leading to death... [Text fragmentary]. During mourning for a parent, the disease recurred 6-7 times in 30 years, nearly fatal each time... [Text fragmentary]. Using previous effective formulas no longer works; adjustments are needed. For identical toxin patterns, Cezi Jinya Jiu (Aconite and Gold Tooth Wine) often cures. This wine is essential for Hongkangjiao... [Text fragmentary]. For differing patterns where toxin enters the abdomen with varying cold/heat and deficiency/excess, tonification or purgation is used... [Text fragmentary]. Pulse verification for Hongkangjiao: Slow pulse is mild, Deep-Tight is moderate, Full-Rapid is severe. Of those over thirty... [Text fragmentary]. Rapid pulse patients survive, slow pulse patients may recover spontaneously. Treatment deviation leads to death. Unlike other diseases, Wind-Toxin must be cleared before stopping medication. Patients claiming self-healing stop meds prematurely... [Text fragmentary].
Su states: Hongkangjiao often flares in late spring and early summer due to heat steaming and emotional distress. Spring onset is mild, summer is severe, autumn is lighter... [Text fragmentary]. Although Hongkangjiao causes emaciation, tonification should generally be avoided. Tonics are suitable only in winter wines. Pills and powders for tonification cause abdominal distension and death... [Text fragmentary]. Hongkangjiao should not be treated with constant tonification, as it causes bloating and rigidity. Regular bowel movements (5-6 times a month) are beneficial... [Text fragmentary]. Toxin attacking internally causes heart anxiety and suffocation, leading to death if untreated. Toxin attacking externally causes skin numbness, treatable with ointment massage... [Text fragmentary]. Acupuncture should continue until limbs feel light.
Su states: Hongkangjiao cannot be fully tonified; treatment must follow seasonal variations and deficiency/excess patterns. Diet should include veal, calf hooves, crucian carp, carp, pork, rabbit... [Text fragmentary]. Recurrent Hongkangjiao may resemble Shi Fa (Stone Carbuncle) with aversion to cold, high fever, headache, and cold extremities, or resemble Malaria with periodic attacks, or resemble Shanghan (Cold Damage)... [Text fragmentary]. For deficient Hongkangjiao with surface toxin, 3-5 doses of Da/Xiao Zhuli Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction) are suitable for heat patterns. Da/Xiao Xuming Tang (Continue Life Decoction) can be used appropriately but not exceeding 10 doses. Shihu Jiu (Dendrobium Wine) and Zhongru Jiu (Stalactite Wine) conflict with Cezi (Prepared Aconite) and harm the body; Shihu San and Zhongru San are suitable for cold patterns... [Text fragmentary].
Tang states: If heat rises to the head, neck, and nape, expose the back to cool it, but keep the lower back and kidneys warm. Dress the back warmly... [Text fragmentary]. Tang states: Hongkangjiao patients rarely achieve permanent cure; it recurs in spring and summer. In summer, when pores are open, sleeping is inadvisable. Sleep should be managed to prevent evil qi... [Text fragmentary].
