The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve) treats bone impaction from consuming various fish, even if impacted for a hundred days.
Take two liang of cotton wool. Heat honey over fire, immerse a piece of the cotton wool in it until it is scorching hot. Bind this hot cotton externally around the site of the impaction. Use a heated gourd to moxa-heat the cotton. If the bone has not yet come out, boil another piece of cotton to replace the previous one. Additionally, blow a small amount of soapberry powder into the nose to induce sneezing, thereby expelling the bone. This is a secret formula and is not transmitted widely. The *Book of Rites* states "remove the Yi from fish," referring to a bone in the shape of the character "Yi" located between the fish's eyes/head. It is called "Yi" because once it enters, it refuses to come out.
Another prescription:
Take the bristles from bamboo fish traps used for catching fish, burn them to ash, and ingest the powder with water. Ash from fish nets is also effective.
Another prescription for treating bone impaction from consuming various meats:
Take one large feather each from the left and right wings of a white rooster, burn them to ash, and ingest with water using a measure of one Dao Gui (a small ancient Chinese unit of volume). Simultaneously, take the remaining bones from the meal and toss them repeatedly behind your back between both hands; the impacted bone will then pass down. (This matches the *Beiji* formula by Wen Zhong.)
Another prescription:
Burn chicken feet to ash, ingest a measure of one Cun Bi (square-inch spoon), and wash down with wine. The bone will be expelled immediately. (Matches the *Shenshi* formula.)
Another prescription:
Take several sheng of fresh mugwort (*Artemisia argyi*), combine with one dou of water and wine, boil down to three or four sheng, and drink slowly. (Matches the *Shenshi* formula.)
Generally, treating diseases should employ substances of their own kind. How could one use cormorant to treat meat/bone impaction, or civet/tiger to treat fish bone impaction? However, methods involving bamboo splints, wild leek (*Allium macrostemon*), chewing tendons, or honey-soaked cotton can be applied generally to all types of impactions. Regarding incantations and minor rituals, they must be explained by a master, so they are not fully recorded here. (From Volume 5)
*Shenshi* treats fish bone impaction from consumption.
Burn the fishing net, ingest the ash with water using a Dao Gui measure; it is effective. This explains why burning and ingesting the fishing net works well for fish bone impaction.
Another prescription for treating impaction and embedded thorns that cannot be removed:
Ingest rose ash powder, one Cun Bi per dose, three times daily. It also treats embedded broken arrows/thorns where pus sacs do not drain, hardness/dryness conditions, and "mouse扑" (a specific condition). After ten days of ingestion, the impaction and thorns will penetrate the skin and emerge effectively.
Another prescription for iron thorns, bamboo, and wood splinters embedded in flesh that break off and cannot be removed, as well as throat impactions that cannot go down:
Pinellia Tuber (*Banxia*, 2 liang, washed); White Peony Root (*Bai Lian*, 2 liang).
Pound and sieve these two herbs. Ingest half a Qian Bi with wine, three times daily. Start with smaller doses and increase gradually because Pinellia irritates the throat. Avoid mutton and malt sugar. Adding one liang of dried ginger is especially good.
Another prescription:
Apply rat brain thickly to the wound surface to expel the thorn. Rat feces can also be used to pack the wound; it is highly effective.
Another prescription for treating impaction:
Mole brain.
Swallow this single substance, and it will go down. It also treats embedded thorns; apply to the thorn wound.
Another prescription for treating throat impaction:
Take the tail of a fish, place it in the collar of clothing, and have someone push downwards from below. The obstruction will descend immediately.
Another prescription:
Equal parts of White Peony Root (*Bai Lian*) and Angelica Dahurica (*Bai Zhi*). Pound into powder, ingest with water using a Dao Gui measure.
Another prescription for treating food impaction:
Burn eagle feces to ash, preserving its nature.
Sieve this single substance. Ingest one Cun Bi. Feces from tigers, wild wolves, and eagles are also suitable and effective.
Another prescription for treating bone impaction preventing swallowing of food and drink:
Take one large feather each from the wings of a white chicken. Burn in a copper vessel until charred to ash. Ingest one Dao Gui with water. It will descend immediately.
Another prescription for treating impaction:
Pinellia Tuber (*Banxia*, 5 liang, washed); Angelica Dahurica (*Bai Zhi*, 5 liang).
Pound and sieve these two herbs. Ingest one Cun Bi, which will induce vomiting. Avoid mutton and malt sugar.
Another prescription:
Take one cup of east-flowing water. Sit facing east. Draw the character for "dragon" on the water surface with your finger. Drink the water. Doing it yourself without knowing how to write it is less effective; having someone else write it while holding your hand is better.
Another prescription:
Write the following text: "Heaven has gates, Earth has roots. All things entering the mouth shall be swallowed." (Matches the *Jiyan* formula, from Volume 22)
*Qianjin* treats impaction.
Soak deer tendon until moist. Form it into a ball the size of a pellet. Hold one end of the tendon and swallow it. Wait until it reaches the impaction site, then slowly pull it back. The impacted bone will attach to the tendon and be extracted. (Matches the *Jiyan* formula.)
Another prescription:
Blow forcefully. For food bone impaction, burn tiger or wild wolf feces and ingest.
Another prescription:
Powdered tiger bone or civet bone. Ingest one Cun Bi. (Matches the *Jiyan* formula.)
Another prescription:
Ingest powdered knotweed herb (*Qumai*), one Cun Bi. (Matches the *Jiyan* formula; *Gujin Luyan* also indicates it treats embedded broken thorns.)
Another prescription:
Swallow pig lard the size of a chicken egg. If not cured, swallow more. Stop when cured. (Matches the *Gujin Luyan* formula.)
Another prescription for treating various impactions:
Make a bamboo splint and scrape it smooth. Wrap it in cotton wool and insert it into the throat until it reaches the impaction site. Move it up and down to extract the bone. (Matches *Duanju*, *Gujin Luyan*, and *Shenshi* formulas.)
Another prescription for treating various impactions:
Ingest powdered cormorant feces, one Cun Bi. (Matches *Jiyan* and *Gujin Luyan* formulas.)
Another prescription for treating fish bone impaction:
Chant "Cormorant, Cormorant" in the mouth, and the bone will descend. (From Volume 26)
Zhang Wenzhong treats fish bone impaction from consumption.
Insert a fish bone into the head; it will descend immediately. Tao Hongjing says, carving/scratching causes it to come out. (Matches *Zhouhou Beiji* formula.)
Another prescription:
Chew wild leek (*Allium macrostemon*) until soft. Tie a string around the center. Hold one end of the string and swallow the leek until it reaches the impaction site, then pull. The impacted bone should come out with it. (Matches *Jiyan*, *Gujin Luyan*, *Shenshi*, *Beiji*, and *Qianjin* formulas.)
Another prescription for fish bone stuck in the throat where other methods fail:
Take maltose candy, form a pill the size of a chicken yolk, and swallow. If it does not remove the bone, swallow another. This method is effective. (Matches *Zhouhou Beiji*, *Qianjin*, *Jiyan*, and *Duanju* formulas.)
Another prescription for hair impaction swallowed during eating, circling the throat:
Burn comb hair to ash. Ingest one Qian Bi with water. (Matches *Zhouhou Beiji*, *Jiyan*, and *Qianjin* formulas, from Volume 3)
Emergency treatment for impaction:
Take a spoonful of good honey. Swallow it slowly to help it go down. (Matches Wen Zhong's formula.)
Another prescription for fish bone stuck in the throat:
Place a small amount of Nao Shan (Ammonium Chloride/Nitre) in the mouth, chew, and swallow. It will descend immediately. (From Volume 7)
*Bixiao* treats fish bone impaction.
Hold otter bone in the mouth; the bone will exit immediately. (Matches *Duanju* formula.)
Another prescription:
Cover the head with a fish net; it descends immediately. *Qianjin* says burn to ash and ingest half a Bi. (Matches *Duanju* formula, from Volume 2)
*Gujin Luyan* treats fish bone transverse in the throat, not coming out after six or seven days.
Burn carp scales and skin together to make powder. Ingest with water, and the bone will come out. If it does not come out, take more. Continue until extracted. (From Volume 29)
