The *Duanju* (Short Treatise) formulas for treating malpresentation (fetal breech or footling presentation).
Apply salt to the soles of the infant's feet, and alternatively, quickly scratch their fingernails. Also rub the mother's abdomen with salt; this will lead to recovery. (Same as in *Cui Shi Qianjin Jiyan*)
Another formula
Mix salt and rice flour, apply to the soles of both feet of the infant, and delivery will proceed smoothly. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Take two pills, crush them into powder, take a quantity measured by three fingers (*san zhi cuo*), and swallow with warm wine. (Same as in *Jiyan Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, and *Cui Shi Fang*, all from Volume 7)
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Verified Formulas) formula for treating malpresentation.
Burn a copper coin until red hot, place it in wine, and drink. (Same as in *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Burn seven hairs from the pubic region, mix with lard (*pig fat*) to form pills the size of soybeans, and swallow. The infant's hand will hold the pill upon exit; this is highly effective. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Write the character "Qian" (Thousand) on the sole of the left foot with cinnabar, and the character "Hei" (Black) on the sole of the right foot. (Same as in *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
If the infant cannot be born and hands or feet appear first, grind snake skin into powder, administer a dose of *dao gui* (a traditional Chinese unit of measurement for powder), or some say *san zhi cuo*. Face east and swallow with wine; delivery will proceed smoothly. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Apply a dose of *dao gui* of genuine cinnabar (*Zhu Sha*) to the infant's axilla. (Same as in *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Use the middle finger to take soot from the bottom of a cooking pot, and draw crosswise marks on the soles of the infant's feet; the infant will deliver smoothly. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang*, *Wen Zhong Fang*, and *Cui Shi Beiji Fang*, all from Volume 11)
The *Shanfan Fang* (Abridged Complexities) formula for treating malpresentation and difficult labor where delivery has not occurred after several days.
Crack open peach kernels (*Tao Ren*). Write the character "Ke" (Can/Okay) on one piece and "Chu" (Exit) on another. Combine them and swallow. (Same as in *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula for treating malpresentation.
Extract the grease from an axle hub, and draw it on the axilla and palms. (Same as in *Cui Shi Fang*, *Wen Zhong Fang*, *Beiji Fang*, *Duanju Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, and *Jiyan Fang*)
Another formula for treating malpresentation and retained placenta.
Collect black dust from the roof of a kitchen stove, and swallow with wine. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*, all from Volume 7)
The *Duanju Fang* formulas for treating transverse lie (fetus lying horizontally) as well as lateral position or hand/foot presenting first.
Puncture the infant's hands or feet with a coarse needle, inserting about two *fen* (approx. 0.6 cm). The pain will startle the infant, causing them to turn and retract, naturally returning to a smooth presentation. (Same as in *Wen Zhong Fang*, *Beiji Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, *Cui Shi Fang*, and *Jiyan Fang*)
The *Jiyan Fang* formula for treating transverse lie.
Take three fingers' worth of dust from the ceiling beams, and swallow with wine. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang*, *Wen Zhong Fang*, and *Cui Shi Fang*, from Volume 11)
The *Wen Zhong Fang* formula for treating oblique or transverse positions preventing delivery.
Administer powder of *Cuscutae Semen* (Dodder Seed, *Tusi Zi*) with wine or rice water using a *fang cun bi* (square-inch spoon); the infant will be delivered. *Plantaginis Semen* (Plantago Seed, *Cheqianzi*) is also good, administered in the same manner. (Same as in *Qianjin Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*)
Another formula
Swallow a pellet of mercury (*Shuiyin*) the size of a soybean. (Same as in *Beiji Fang* and *Cui Shi Fang*)
Regarding the above two categories of transverse lie and malpresentation, although the classifications differ, the therapeutic methods are largely similar. One should exercise judgment and select the best methods for use.
