When preparing for childbirth, first apply Cinnabar (Zhusha) to the depression behind the neck of the parturient woman (Wanwanzhong), and also apply it to the depressions on both sides of the philtrum under the nostrils (Niuchuanju). Then, facing the delivery area, recite a spell: "This place is empty and peaceful, allowing the parturient woman of the [Surname] family to reside here in this auspicious spot. May all gods protect her, may all ghosts depart quickly, do not offend each other." Recite this three times. After finishing the spells, kindle fires at the four corners of the delivery area. Place four vessels of Jinghua Water (well water drawn at dawn) at the four corners of the delivery area as well. Place a knife horizontally across each vessel of water, and gently rub or polish the blades. Another method involves holding a knife and reciting a spell towards the delivery area: "A one-foot knife with a seven-inch blade, resisting the unfavorable days to treat difficult labor." Recite this three times, then nail the knife into the ground of the delivery area.
Cui Shi stated: Regarding difficult labor in women, the signs determining life and death are as follows: If the mother's face is red and the tongue is cyanotic, the fetus is dead but the mother lives; if the mother's face is red and the tongue is red, with froth coming from the mouth, the mother dies but the fetus lives; if the mother's lips and mouth corners are cyanotic, with froth coming from both sides of the mouth, both mother and child die. (Wen Zhong's view is identical, found in Volume 10, Upper Part)
