In *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up the Sleeve), regarding bleeding from metal injuries (Jinchuang, traumatic wounds caused by sharp metal objects), if the patient feels thirsty, they should endure it. One should commonly use dry food and fatty substances to quench thirst, and strictly avoid salty foods. If one drinks too much porridge or similar liquids, the eyebrows and corners of the eyes may fall off; this is a sign of untreatability. If such symptoms occur, it indicates that the condition cannot be cured.
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* records three types of ointments and powders for treating metal injuries, which should be prepared in advance to prevent emergencies.
Xuduan Ointment Formula:
Shuxuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Sheyan (Patriniae Herba), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 3 liang).
Chop the above three herbs, and decoct them in 3 jin of lard on an open stove facing east. Perform the process of dipping and lifting three times (three down, three up). Once the ointment is formed, strain out the dregs. For deep and large wounds, apply only to the surrounding area without allowing the wound edges to approximate; for shallow and small wounds, apply evenly to allow the wound to heal together, stopping bleeding and relieving pain. It can also be taken orally like a pill the size of an apricot kernel, with wine as the vehicle.
Another Gesheyan Ointment Formula:
Sheyan (Patriniae Herba), Qiangweigen (Rosae Rugosae Radix), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Yege (Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix) (each 2 liang); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (each 1.5 liang, peeled); Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zelan (Lycopersici Herba) (each 1 liang); Songzhi (Pini Resina), Baizhi (Platycladi Resina) (each 3 liang).
Chop the above eleven herbs, and decoct them in 2 jin of lard. Separately, add one piece of Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) into the mixture. When the color turns yellow, the ointment is ready. Strain and filter, then store in a sealed container. Apply to the wound; regardless of size, it will heal without suppuration. (From Volume □)
Shenshi Fang Prepared Powder for Metal Injuries:
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (each 1 liang); Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (3 liang); Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (4 liang); Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) (3 liang, processed to release moisture).
Pound the above six herbs into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a square-inch measure) with wine, three times daily. (Also found in Volume 29 of *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Other formulas from *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* for treating metal injuries:
Ge Zhan Formula: Burn a one-cun square piece of felt to ash, grind it finely, and apply to the wound for cure.
Another Formula:
Remove the skin and tips of Xingren (Pruni Armeniaci Semen), pound into a paste. Mix equally with Duanshi (Ferrum Oxidatum Rubrum). Combine with lard, simmer thoroughly until the almonds turn yellow, strain out the dregs, and apply to the wound five or six times daily until healed.
Another Formula:
Burn old blue cloth to ash, apply to the wound, bind securely, and leave for several days until healed, then remove.
Another Formula:
Pound fresh Sheyan (Patriniae Herba) and apply to the wound for cure.
Another Formula:
Cook and pound the stems and leaves of Yelangya Cao (likely referring to a local herb, possibly *Euphorbia* species or similar) and apply as a poultice; it also stops bleeding. (Another version suggests burning the grass to ash for application.)
Another Formula:
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, dig up Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), dry it in the sun, pound into powder, and apply to the wound to stop bleeding and relieve pain.
Another Formula:
Diaozhang Gen (Root of *Cinnamomum* species native to Jiangnan) grows in Jiangnan. Scrape the bark shavings and apply to the wound; it has miraculous effects.
Another Formula:
Apply Zitanmo (Santalum Album Powder) to metal injuries to stop pain, stop bleeding, and promote tissue regeneration.
Another Formula:
Burn Ostrea (Ostreae Concha) to powder and apply; this is excellent. When binding wounds, use old cloth, neither too tight nor too loose, akin to tying a belt. (All from Volume 7)
Recent Effective Formula for Metal Injuries or Crush/Fracture Wounds:
Peel new Sangpi (Mori Cortex), make threads to suture the wound, wrap with new Mori Cortex, and smear with Sangbai Zhi (juice from Mori Cortex); this is highly effective. Small wounds heal merely by wrapping with Mori Cortex.
Another Formula for Metal Injuries, Moxibustion Sores, and Burns:
La (Beeswax) (size of a walnut kernel), Xingzi (Pruni Armeniaci Semen) (one scoop, pounded), Binglangren (Arecae Semen) (one piece), Xunluxiang (Boswelliae Resina) (half he).
Mix and pound the above four ingredients, decoct in lard. Apply this medicine onto cloth strips and patch onto the wound; this formula is very effective.
