[Five Verified Prescriptions]
Prescription for treating Shanghan (Cold Damage), seasonal warm diseases, and epidemics, characterized by headache, high fever, and a full pulse, applicable when the disease has just begun within one or two days.
Cinnabar (1 liang, ground into powder)
Take the above single herb, boil it in 1 dou of water, reduce to obtain 1 sheng, and take it all at once. Cover with blankets to induce sweating. Avoid raw and cold foods. (Same as recorded in *Qianjin Fang*)
Another prescription for treating epidemic-type Shanghan that remains unresolved after three days.
High-quality Fermented Soybean (1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze) Scallion White (cut, 1 sheng)
Take the above two herbs, add 5 sheng of urine from an uncircumcised boy, boil until reduced to 2 sheng, divide into two doses, and take them. Cover with blankets to induce sweating; this is extremely effective. (Same as recorded in *Qianjin Fang*)
Another decoction for treating Shanghan after macules/rashes appear on the fifth or sixth day.
Pig Gallbladder (3 he) Chicken Egg (1 piece) Vinegar (3 he)
Combine the above three ingredients and boil, allowing three boils. Persons of strong constitution should consume it all at once; persons of weak constitution should boil for six or seven boils and divide into two doses. The effect is indicated by sweating. (Same as recorded in *Wenzhen Beiji Fang* and *Qianjin Fang*)
Da Chai Hu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) for treating Shanghan that remains unresolved after seven or eight days, presenting with taciturnity, mental restlessness, dry feces in the abdomen, and delirium.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, washed with hot water, each 8 liang) Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 4 liang) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) Wei Rui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, each 2 liang) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried)
Cut the above ten herbs, boil in 1 dou of water, reduce to obtain 3 sheng, filter out the dregs, and take 1 sheng warm. Take three times daily. Avoid Algae, Brassica vegetables, mutton, and maltose syrup. (Fan Wang's formula adds Renshen [Ginseng Radix] 3 liang, otherwise identical; *Qianjin Fang* uses Shaoyao but does not use Zhishi [Aurantii Fructus Immaturus]*)
Another prescription for treating Shanghan febrile diseases lasting more than ten days, where sweating fails to resolve the condition, or where heat persists after vomiting and purging, or where diarrhea continues unceasingly and macules/rashes appear.
Da Qing (Isatidis Folium, 4 liang) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried, 2 liang) E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini, honey-fried into beads, 2 liang) Chi (Fermented Soybean, 1 sheng, wrapped in silk gauze)
Cut the above four herbs, boil in 8 sheng of water. First boil the first three herbs, reduce to obtain 3.5 sheng, filter out the dregs. Add Chi and boil for three boils, then filter out the dregs. Finally, add E Jiao and stir until dissolved. Divide into three warm doses. If the medicine is finished, prepare more, ensuring there is some left over. Drink if thirsty. This formula clears heat, stops vomiting and diarrhea, and is non-toxic. Avoid Algae and Brassica vegetables. (Same as recorded in *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*, *Shenshi Fang*, and *Qianjin Fang*, originating from Volume II)
