Chapter: Nine Formulas for Wind-induced Palpitations and Fright
Category: Formulas
[English Translation]
Discussion on the etiology of wind-induced palpitations and fright (palpitations and fright caused by wind pathogen invasion): This arises from a weak constitution and deficiency of Heart Qi, where the meridians of the Heart are invaded by wind pathogen. Alternatively, due to fear or distress, Heart Qi becomes deficient, making one susceptible to wind pathogen. When wind pathogen contends with Heart Qi, it causes fright and restlessness; prolonged fright leads to unstable palpitations. The clinical manifestations include immobility of the eyeballs and inability to speak. Pulse diagnosis reveals a moving and weak pulse.
Guangji Fang treats heat-wind palpitations and fright, calms the mind, and prolongs life when taken long-term. Zhenxin Wan (Calming the Heart Pill) Formula:
Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Longchi (Dragon Bone, crushed), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Fuling (Poria), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Tuber) [each 8 fen, de-heartened], Yinbo (Silver Leaf, 200 sheets, finely ground), Huqing (Tiger Eye, one piece, roasted), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus, roasted), Bailian (Ibani Radix), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted) [each 6 fen], Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) [2 fen].
The above seventeen herbs are pounded, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills. Shortly after meals, take fifteen pills the size of a wu zi (ciboule seed) with warm water, twice daily. Gradually increase to thirty pills. Discontinue if diarrhea occurs. Avoid consuming seaweed, songcai (Chinese cabbage), vinegar, garlic, wheat products, sticky foods, and stale or foul-smelling substances. (From Volume I)
Shenshi's Dadingxin Wan (Great Calming Heart Pill): Treats trance, palpitations, and mental unrest. It is also used when wind pathogen invades the zang organs due to deficiency, causing forgetfulness, chest and hypochondriac fullness, and anorexia. Formula:

The above fourteen herbs are pounded, mixed, and sifted, then formed into pills the size of a wu zi with honey. Take five pills before meals, three times daily. If ineffective, gradually increase the dose. Another version excludes Niuxi but includes 1 liang of Zhuyu (Corni Fructus) and 10 zhu of Yinye; the rest remain the same. Avoid raw scallions, vinegar products, pork, plums, peaches, and sparrow meat.
