The etiology of wind-induced fright and terror syndrome arises from a constitutionally weak state susceptible to wind pathogenic factors, which invade and overwhelm the fu and zang organs. The clinical presentation resembles being pursued by someone. Deficiency of Heart Qi leads to fright, while deficiency of Liver Qi leads to terror. The Foot Jueyin (Liver) channel is overwhelmed by these pathogens.
*Guangji Fang* treats heat-wind arising from Heart deficiency rushing upward to the head and face, with urgency in the Heart system, frequent palpitations and fright, vexation in the four limbs, coldness in the waist and knees, and unsettled spirit during pathogenic attacks. Formula for Xijiao Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Pill): Xijiao (Horn of Rhinoceros, processed into flakes), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Renshen (Ginseng Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Fangkui (Adenophora Root), Binglangren (Areca Seed) (each 5 fen); Qingmuxiang (Blue Sandalwood), Guangmingsha (Refined Cinnabar, ground), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (each 8 fen); Longchi (Dragon Teeth, roasted), Tiejing (Iron Essence) (each 6 liang); Lufengfang (Wasp Nest, roasted), Yinbo (Silver Leaf, ground) (each 3 fen). The above thirteen ingredients are crushed, sifted, and mixed with honey to form pills the size of wu zi (Chinese quince seeds). Take 20–25 pills with wine, twice daily. Avoid raw blood products, hot noodles, buckwheat, roasted meat, okra, garlic, and sticky foods during treatment. (From Volume I)
*Shenshi Fang* Xuming Tang (Continuing Life Decoction) treats severe wind disease where wind pathogen enters the Heart, causing heart pain radiating to the back or back pain radiating to the heart, alternating fright and terror moving up and down, distension and slight pain in the lower abdomen, alternating chills and fever, chest stuffiness resembling mild warmth, erratic progression of symptoms, cyanotic complexion, or pale/yellowish hue. It addresses deficiency labor where pathogenic factors enter the hundred vessels, treating various diseases. Ingredients: Renshen (Ginseng Root), Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, nodes removed), Duhuo (Angelica Pubescens Root), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Xiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, crushed and wrapped in cotton) (each 2 liang); Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, one piece, processed), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Xixin (Asarum Root) (each 3 fen); Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root, 5 fen), Shaoyao (Peony Root, 2 fen), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root, 1 liang), Xingren (Apricot Seed, 40 pieces, tips and skins removed), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 1 liang). The above seventeen ingredients are boiled in ten dou of water; first boil Mahuang for more than ten boils, then add other herbs. Boil until 4.5 sheng remains, strain, add ten jujubes, and decoct until 3 sheng remains. It also treats insufficiency of blood and qi in the five zang and six fu organs, loss of hun and po spirits, restlessness of the five zang organs day and night, vague sorrowfulness, frequent fear and terror in the Heart as if haunted by ghosts. These conditions result from great fright and falling from heights while exposed to wind. Treatment uses Shihuang San (Ten Yellow Powder): Xionghuang (Realgar, 5 fen, roasted), Renshen (Ginseng Root, 5 fen), Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 5 fen, sweat removed), Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 4 fen), Zhusha (Cinnabar, 3 fen, ground), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, 4 fen), Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, 2 fen), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit, 2 fen), Xixin (Asarum Root, 2 fen), Huangqi (Astragalus Root, 3 fen), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 3 fen), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 1 fen), Puhuang (Typha Pollen, 1 fen), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig, 3 fen), Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, nodes removed, 1 fen), Huangsun (1 zhuang meng, another interpretation is dusk), Huanghuan (3 fen), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, 3 fen). The above eighteen ingredients are crushed and sifted into powder. Take one fang cun bi (square-inch measure) with warm wine before meals, three times daily, gradually increasing to two measures. If muscle strength improves after taking this powder... (Volume VIII)
