[Pathogenesis] When a person's skin is deficient, invasion by Wind pathogenic factors causes Urticaria (a skin condition characterized by itchy wheals). If Cold predominates, the rash appears red; if Wind predominates, the rash appears white. In severe cases, itching and pain occur, and scratching leads to the formation of sores. (From Volume II)
Shen Shi Formula for treating Wind-induced Urticaria or concurrent sores, where symptoms are severe with chest tightness and fullness, shortness of breath, and a desire to vomit:
Inyu (Caulis Corylopsis, seven fen from Mount Tai, processed by roasting) Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) Wutou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, prepared) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Bailian (Radix Belamcandae) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), each three fen; Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), two fen.
The above seven herbs are crushed, sifted into powder. Take half a qianbi (a small measuring spoon) per dose, twice daily. Avoid pork and raw green onions.
Another formula for treating Urticaria accompanied by irritability, fullness, and uncontrolled bleeding:
Take fresh, moist horse manure, wring out the juice. Administer two sheng. For mild cases, one sheng cures immediately. If the manure is dry, add water to moisten it before wringing out the juice. (Both from Volume X)
Yan Nian Formula for external wash treating Wind Urticaria with itching and chest oppression, where scratching exudes fluid and forms sores:
Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), one xiao jin; Loulu Gen (Radix Agrimoniae), one xiao jin; Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus), five xiao liang; Jili (Fructus Tribuli); Chu Jing Ye (Folium et Caulis Broussonetiae Papyriferae, tender parts), one xiao jin.
The above five herbs are cut and boiled in Erqing Shui (fermented rice liquid) two sheng until reduced to one sheng. Dip cotton cloth in the decoction and wipe the itchy area. Do this eight to nine times daily. Afterward, apply powder to the affected area to heal.
Another formula, Zhishi Wan (Immature Bitter Orange Pill), primarily treats Wind-Heat Qi rushing upward, causing heat in the head and face, Wind Urticaria on the skin, severe itching leading to sores, and an inability to eat much:
Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, roasted) Jili Zi (Semen Tribuli) Kushen (Radix Sophorae Flavescentis), each six fen; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), four fen; Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) Tianmendong (Rhizoma Asparagi), each three fen; Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), four fen.
The above eight herbs are crushed and sifted. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wu zi (wu berry seeds). Take ten pills per dose, washed down with thin wine, twice daily. The dosage can be increased to fifteen pills. Avoid garlic, hot noodles, carp, peaches, plums, sparrow meat, and raw green onions. (Both from Volume X)
Another formula, Shengma Xijiao Gao (Cimicifuga and Rhinoceros Horn Ointment), treats various Wind-Heat toxic heat causing itching that erupts through the skin. Scratching causes red Urticaria, accompanied by yellow discharge, which later crusts over into purulent scabs. It treats all such conditions:
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, shaved) Bailian (Radix Belamcandae) Loulu (Radix Agrimoniae) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, roasted) Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) Sheng She Xian Cao (Herba Siegesbeckiae Orientales) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum) Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, ground and added when decoction is ready), each two liang; Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), three liang; Zhizi (Fructus Gardeniae), twenty fruits, split; Suo Gen (Radix Pteridis Multifidae), four liang; Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae), three liang.
The above thirteen herbs are cut. Soak in Zhu Li (Bamboo Juice) two sheng overnight. Add Cheng Lian Zhu Zhi (refined lard) five sheng. Boil until the moisture from the bamboo juice evaporates completely. Strain to remove dregs. Add Mangxiao and stir until it solidifies into an ointment. Rub onto the affected area five to six times daily for better results. (Same as recorded in Wen Zhong)
Jin Xiao Formula for treating Wind-Heat stagnation causing rashes, where scratching exudes fluid and itching is unbearable:
Mahuang Gen (Radix Ephedrae) Shechuangzi (Fructus Cnidii) Jili Zi (Semen Tribuli) Fanshi (Alumen), each two liang, calcined; Baifen (White Powder), two xiao sheng.
The above five herbs are crushed and sifted. Place in a raw silk bag. Apply the powder whenever itching occurs. This formula is very effective.
