The etiology is that due to the deficiency of Qi and Blood in women, Wind pathogen invades the Ying (Nutrient) and Wei (Defensive) levels. The pathogen overflows into the interstices of the skin and combines with deficient Heat. Consequently, it wanders throughout the body, presenting a sensation as if insects are crawling on the skin. (From Volume II)
Shinan Tang (Cotinus Decoction) from Qianjin Fang treats sixty-four types of Wind disorders. Symptoms include pruritus with exudation ("Yinyin Yeye"), a sensation of Wind entering the skin like crawling insects, stiffness and rigidity of the waist and spine, "Wu Huan Liu Ji" (five types of flaccidity and six types of spasticity), spasms and contractures of the hands and feet, urticaria (wind wheals) that become sores upon scratching, "Feng Shi" (Wind Corpse - a condition characterized by sudden itching), generalized pruritus, sudden swelling of the face and eyes, and inability to raise the hands above the head.
Ingredients: Shinan (Cotini Fructus, roasted), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) [each 1 liang]; Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Xiongqiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma) [each 6 fen]; Gancao (Licorice Root, 8 fen, roasted), Ganyedi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 3 fen), Shizuyu (Corni Fructus, 5 fen).
Cut the above twelve herbs. Boil with 6 sheng of water and 3 sheng of wine until 3 sheng of decoction remains. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses. Induce profuse sweating. Avoid exposure to wind. This formula is effective for all cases of urticaria. Avoid consuming Wuji (Chrysanthemi Fructus), raw green onions, raw vegetables, seaweed, and Songcai (Chinese cabbage).
Another prescription for treating generalized pain and itching, feeling as if insects are biting the skin; when scratched, the epidermis peels off forming sores.
Ingredients: Jili Zi (Tribuli Fructus, 3 sheng, crushed), Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus, 2 sheng), Chongweizi (Leonuri Fructus, 1 sheng), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 5 liang); Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix, 1 jin), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Fanshi (Alumen, 3 san, calcined).
Cut the above seven herbs. Boil with 4 sheng of wine and 7 sheng of water until 4 sheng of decoction remains. Strain the dregs. Add Fanshi (Alumen). Heat three times. Wipe the body with a cloth. Discontinue when cured.
Another method:
Moxibustion at Quchi (LI11). Use the number of moxa cones corresponding to the patient's age ("Sui Nian Zhuang"). Apply immediately upon onset. It is highly effective. (Both from Volume XXIII)
Yannian Jili Zi Wan (Tribulus Pill for Longevity) treats Hot Wind rushing to the head and face, causing itching on the body like crawling insects, and occasional outbreaks of wind rash. It dispels Wind-Heat, resolves rashes, and simultaneously tonifies the body, strengthens sinews and bones, increases vitality, and consolidates physical strength.
Ingredients: Jili Zi (Tribuli Fructus, 6 fen), Huangqi (Astragali Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) [each 3 fen]; Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, roasted), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) [each 4 fen]; Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma), Digubai Pi (Phellodendri Cortex) [each 2 fen]; Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 1 fen).
Pulverize the above twelve herbs and sift. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wu zi (wheat seeds). Take ten pills per dose, administered with wine. Take twice daily. Gradually increase to fifteen pills. Taking Shu Jian (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Decoction) or Huanglian Wan during this period causes no interference. Avoid pork and raw green onions.
