The *Guangji* formula treats jaundice, where the entire body and face are completely yellow, and the urine is as dark as concentrated gardenia juice. Yinchen Pill Formula.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (4 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (2 liang, processed with honey), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liang).
The above four ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into pills with honey. Taken on an empty stomach with rice water, in doses of twenty pills the size of a tung tree seed, twice daily. Gradually increase to twenty-five pills, stopping when mild diarrhea occurs. Avoid hot noodles, garlic, buckwheat, sticky foods, and stale or foul-smelling substances. (Another version includes Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) 3 liang, found in Volume I.)
The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* treats jaundice, where the whole body and face are yellow like oranges or pomelos. It arises from sudden fever; if cold is applied externally to force the heat down, the heat remains in the stomach, generating a yellow coating. This is caused by heat steaming upward. The formula is as follows.
Zhuzhi (Porci Adipis) (1 sheng).
Take one ingredient: mature rendered pork fat. Warm it and consume it all at once, three times a day. Dry stool should be discharged; stop taking it once slight improvement occurs after defecation. (Same as the preceding *Jinxiao Fang*, also same as *Beiji Fang* and Cui Shi's formula, found in Volume III.)
The *Duanju Fang* treats jaundice where both the body and eyes are yellow, with skin showing dust-like yellow spots. Sanwu Yinchenhao Tang Formula.
Yinchenhao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (one handful), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (24 pieces), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (1 jin). (*Qianjin Fang* adds Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 3 liang).
The above three ingredients are boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.5 sheng. Strain the dregs. Roast Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) over high fire until red-hot, then throw it into the decoction. Boil until stable, take the clear liquid. Drink 1 sheng when the temperature is suitable. Cover the patient to induce sweating throughout the body, and apply warm powder to the skin; the disease will heal. If no sweat occurs, administer another 1 sheng; healing occurs upon sweating. (Same as *Shenshi Fang*, *Gujin Luyan*, and *Qianjin Yi Fang*, found in Volume IV.)
The *Jiyan Fang* treats jaundice where the body and face are all yellow. Dahuang San Formula.
Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (4 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (4 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (4 liang).
The above three ingredients are crushed and sifted into a powder. Take one fangcunbi (a measure roughly equivalent to a square inch spoonful) before meals, three times a day. It can also be made into pills. (Same as *Beiji Fang*, Wen Zhong's formula, and *Qianjin Fang*, found in Volume II.)
The *Shanfan Fang* treats jaundice where the entire body is yellow. Yinchen Tang Formula.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (4 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (4 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (3 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) (2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 3 liang).
The above six ingredients are cut and boiled in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. If the body is emaciated/weak, remove Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and add Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen) 5-6 liang and Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) cut into 1 sheng. (Same as *Gujin Luyan* and *Qianjin Fang*, found in Volume X.)
*Qianjin Yi Fang* states: Whenever encountering epidemic febrile diseases, internal stasis often leads to jaundice. Simply use Guding San (Melon Seed Powder) insufflated into the nose to discharge yellow fluid, and the disease heals without recurrence. One must vigilantly monitor patients for any slight yellowish hue on the limbs, body, or face. If present, use Guding San immediately; do not let the condition spread unnoticed, or it will become critical. Strictly avoid alcohol and wheat noodles; violation may lead to death.
Furthermore, for ordinary people who suddenly develop chills followed by jaundice, with skin showing yellow dust-like spots, scanty dark urine, occasional constipation, but normal strength and appetite, where previous decoctions have failed to clear residual heat in chronic jaundice cases. Kushen San Formula.
Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix) (1 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1 liang), Tinglizi (Descurainiae Semen Lepidii seu Lepidii Semen) (processed), Gudi (Momordicae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huangbo (Phellodendri Cortex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
The above seven ingredients are crushed into a powder. Take one fangcunbi with water. It should induce strong vomiting; take once daily if vomiting occurs, or twice daily if not. It may also cause purgation. After five days of medication, adjust based on response; if no effect, continue. Avoid pork and cold water. (Same as *Gujin Luyan*, *Qianjin Fang*, and *Duanju Fang*, found in Volume XVIII.)
Cui Shi treats jaundice where the body and face are entirely yellow. Yinchen Tang. Formula from Taiyi Xiaowei Shi Tuo.
Yinchenhao (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (3 liang), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 liang), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (14 pieces), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (1 liang, processed), Renshen (Panacis Ginseng Radix) (1 liang).
The above seven ingredients are cut and boiled in 10 dou of water until reduced to 3 sheng. Divide into three doses. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*, found in Volume I.)
*Yannian Milu* Zhi Zi Tang treats generalized jaundice yellow like an orange, with fullness and urgency in the heart and hypochondrium. Formula:
Zhiziren (Gardeniae Semen) (4 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (4 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (3 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) (3 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liang).
Gualou (Trichosanthis Fructus) (3 liang), Mangxiao (Natri Sulfas) (2 liang).
The above eight ingredients are cut and boiled in 9 sheng of water until reduced to 2.8 sheng. Strain. Divide into three warm doses. Administer each dose every four to five li distance/time interval. (Found in Volume X.)
*Bixiao Fang* treats jaundice where the body and eyes are golden-yellow; applicable to all types of jaundice. Formula:
Take roots of peach trees growing eastward, finely chopped like chopsticks or hairpins, about one handful. Do not expose to wind during harvesting, nor let women, chickens, or dogs see them. Boil in 1 sheng of water until reduced to 0.1 sheng. Take on an empty stomach when temperature is suitable. Within three to five days after ingestion, the yellow color disperses like thin clouds, with the eyes being the last to recover, taking one hundred days to fully normalize. After body jaundice clears, occasionally drink a cup of clear wine to help disperse eye discoloration; otherwise, dispersion is slow. Avoid noodles, pork, and fish. This was a secret family formula of Xu Zhicai, recounted by his nephew Zhenhui. (Found in Volume I.)
*Jinxiao Fang* treats jaundice where the body, face, and eyes are golden-yellow, and urine is thick like boiled Phellodendron juice, which other physicians could not cure. Highly effective Yinchen Tang Formula.
Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) (4 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (2 liang), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (3 liang), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (3 liang), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 liang), Longdancao (Gentianae Radix) (2 liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) (2 liang, processed), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) (4 liang).
The above eight ingredients are cut and boiled in 8 sheng of water until reduced to 2.7 sheng. Divide into three warm doses. If the body is extremely weak, add Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) 1 sheng, increase Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) to 7 liang, and remove Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); if strength is adequate, keep Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) as originally prescribed for efficacy. Follow the same dietary restrictions. If not cured, prepare again; limit to three or four courses for cure. Administer one course every three to five days. (Same as *Jingxin Lu*, obtained from Li Hao, highly effective.)
