Etiology: The Lung governs Qi, its meridian is the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, and Lung Qi connects to the nose. If the meridians and zang-organs are harmonious, nasal Qi is patent, allowing one to distinguish odors; if wind-cold injures the zang-organs, and pathogenic factors invade the Hand-Taiyin Meridian, causing Qi stagnation in the nasal region, fluids become obstructed, nasal Qi fails to circulate smoothly, thus resulting in an inability to distinguish odors.
Qianjin Formula for Treating Nasal Obstruction.
Semen Kansui (Gansui), Herba Tectariae (Tongcao), Radix Asari (Xixin), Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Fuzi, processed), each 1 fen.
The above four herbs are pounded into powder. Take a small amount formed into a pill using the gallbladder of a white male dog, insert it into the nostril until cured. (Cui Shi's method is the same, stating that sudden discharge of hot mucus in amounts of four or five sheng leads to cure.)
Another Formula.
Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zaojiao), roasted, powdered to the size of a soybean, blown into the nostril using a reed tube.
Another Formula.
Blow in powder of Rhizoma Zingiberis Siccatum (Ganjiang), or mix with honey and pack into the nostril.
Another Formula.
Grind an iron object (or lock) on a whetstone to obtain powder, mix with suid fat (zhuzhi), wrap in cotton, and pack into the nostril until cured.
Another Formula.
Lie prone facing the bed edge, pour newly drawn cold water over the Yuzhen acupoint (Note: Yuzhen is located at the back of the head). Cured. (All from Volume 6, Tongzhong section).

The above seven herbs are chopped, soaked in vinegar (kujiu) overnight, then decocted with one jin of suid fat until Fuzi turns yellow and the ointment forms. Wrap in cotton and insert into the nostril, while also massaging the vertex of the head.
Duanju Formula for Nasal Obstruction. Xiang Gao Ointment.
Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Danggui), Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong (Xiong), Radix Asari (Xixin), Flos Magnoliae (Xinyi), Herba Tectariae (Tongcao), Cortex Cinnamomi (Guixin), Herba Agastaches (Xuncao), each 3 fen.
The above eight herbs are chopped, soaked in vinegar overnight, then decocted with one sheng of suid fat until Baizhi turns yellow and the ointment forms. Filter out dregs, take a small amount to instill into the nostril, or wrap in cotton and pack into the nostril until cured. (Qianjin Fang lacks Guixin, does not use Xuncao but uses Cao Cao/Maocao).
Qianjin Formula for Chronic Nasal Obstruction, Loss of Smell, and Continuous Clear Discharge.
Take one handful of Tribulus terrestris (Jili) crushed after being run over by carts on the road. Decoct with three sheng of water until cooked. Lie supine first, have the patient hold one he in their mouth, and irrigate the nostril. Within no more than two applications, a violent sneeze will occur, expelling two or three polypoid growths resembling rotting worms, leading to cure. (Another formula uses Huanglian, each 2 liang).

Herba Cirsii Japonici (Xiaoji), one handful.
Decoct this single herb in three sheng of water to obtain one sheng, filter out dregs, and divide into doses for oral administration.

Filter out dregs, take an amount the size of a soybean, insert into the nostril, twice daily, until cured.
