Apply Rhizoma Coptidis (Huanglian, 黄连) powder mixed with vinegar to the umbilicus. Then, decoct Radix Angelicae Dahuricae (Baizhi, 白芷) and Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis (Heishanzhi, 黑山栀), and apply the hot compress to the chest. (This method can also be ground into powder and insufflated into the nose to treat epistaxis). Dip cotton wool in juice of Allium tuberosum (Jiucai, 韭菜) and urine of a healthy child (Tongbian, 童便), and wipe the back. Wrap minced garlic around the feet to guide heat downward. (All these methods are also used to treat epistaxis). After erroneous sweating in Shaoyin disease, heat forces blood out from the nine orifices; administer the cold water formula named "Xiajue" (Lower Jue).
After a severe Shanghan (Cold Damage) illness, if heat-toxins attack the eyes, wash them with boiled honeycomb, six to seven times daily. Alternatively, soak a blue cloth in cold water and cover the eyes. If the tongue protrudes due to Shanghan, apply Semen Crotonis Tiglii (Badou, 巴豆) for application.
Stir-fried scallion white is covered on the umbilicus, and warmed with a clay pot filled with hot water. Or, cut scallion white into a bundle as thick as a bowl, about one cun high, place it on the umbilicus, and moxa-compress with an iron until the scallion is soft, then replace with fresh ones. First, place a small amount of Piper nigrum (Huajiao, 胡椒) powder or Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香) and Lignum Dalbergiae Odoriferae (Xiangfu, 降香 - *Note: Dingxiang usually refers to Clove, but context suggests aromatic opening; assuming standard aromatics*) powder into the umbilicus before compressing yields better results. These methods are all used to treat Yin-pattern Cold Damage.
Zhonghan (Middle Cold) causes cold limbs and abdominal pain; this also treats abdominal pain caused by Yin-pattern. Take one sheng of Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸), moisten with wine, wrap in cloth into two packets, steam in a rice steamer until hot, peel off the skin of a hot chicken, and apply as a patch. Additionally, for abdominal pain with cold extremities, apply mustard seed powder mixed with warm water to the umbilicus.
After sexual intercourse between man and woman, if exposed to external wind-cold or ingested cold/raw foods internally, leading to abdominal pain. The male may experience retraction of the scrotum, the female vaginal retraction, or spasmodic curling of hands and feet turning purple-black, even to the point of locked jaw and cessation of breath. This is called Yin-pattern Shanghan, also known as Jiashe Shanghan (Color-clasping Cold Damage). Urgently, heat bricks red, place several layers of cloth, and compress the abdomen. Or follow the previous scallion-compression method. For mild cases, use the previous egg-compression method.
Take a piece of fine silver, flatten and heat red. If the patient has not yet passed away, heat until boiling hot and place on the umbilicus. Then take a chicken, slit open retaining feathers, remove the heart and viscera, fill with one crushed grain of Piper nigrum (Huajiao, 胡椒), three fen of Minium (Huandan, 黄丹), and two fen of Natrii Nitras (Huoxiao, 火硝). Seal the medicine at the urethral meatus (male) using the left hand palm to grind evenly and press; females use the right hand palm to receive and grind the medicine evenly, fill the umbilicus with the powder, moxa-burn with Artemisia argyi (Aiye, 艾叶), have the person lie supine, and cover with a cloth. This is very effective.
After Shanghan, relapse due to exertion from intercourse, causing testicular swelling and retraction into the abdomen with agonizing colic. Take the clothes of the woman who had intercourse with the man and cover the man with them.
