The white bark of the root of *Lycii Cortex* (Gouqigen) and chicken eggshells (in equal parts) are pounded into an extremely fine powder. Apply to the eye. Then wash with juice extracted from fresh *Fructus Lycii* (Gouqi), six or seven times a day.
Extract juice from *Fructus Lycii* (Gouqi). Instill into the eye three to five times daily. This is highly effective.
Prepare a paste using *Polygoni Avicularis Herba* (Ebusicao, one tael, processed into paste), calcined *Calamina* (Luganshi, three qian, calcined and quenched three times in urine of a young boy), fine porcelain dust (one qian five fen), gallbladder bile (two qian), and a small amount of sand. Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder and mix into a paste. Apply to the pterygium or corneal opacity. Remove after one night, then wash with a decoction of *Coptidis Rhizoma* (Huanglian) and *Phellodendri Cortex* (Huangbai), before reapplying. The effect is even better. Alternatively, use purified saltpeter (Yanxiao, one tael, melted in a copper vessel), prepared lead oxide (Fei Huangdan, two fen), and plum-blossom borneol (Meihua Bingpian, two fen, placed at the top of the bottle). Stir with a copper chopstick, store in a porcelain bottle, seal with wax to prevent leakage. Apply a small amount each time; the effect is miraculous. This formula is named "Tianci Gao" (Heaven-Bestowed Paste).
Another formula treats long-standing pterygium and corneal opacity, named "Wutui San" (Five-Shedding Powder). Human nail cuticles (Ren Tui, fried in milk and ground), pangolin scales (Shanjia, fried), cicada slough (Chantui, washed and fried), and snake skin (Longtui, fried). [Text fragmentary].
Grind *Smilax glabra* rhizome (Shancangu) with human milk and instill into the eye three to four times daily. Alternatively, stuff *Polygonum aviculare* herb (Ebusicao) into the nostril: if the left eye is affected, stuff the right nostril; if the right eye is affected, stuff the left nostril. The speck-like opacity will disappear on the same day. Effective for early stages, but ineffective for chronic cases. Also, use camphor and Dongdan [text unclear], stuff cotton into the ear; cure overnight.
Take a large handful of *Portulaca oleracea* (Machixian), wash clean, wrap with a small amount of *Natrii Sulfas* (Mangxiao) in cotton cloth, and apply to the affected area, changing frequently.
For growths such as pterygium [text fragmentary] causing pain or itching, gradually covering the pupil: Take peeled apricot kernels (Xingren, two qian five fen) and zinc oxide (Shufen, five qian), pound until mushy, wrap in cotton cloth [around a chopstick?]. If it covers the sclera within half a day or the iris within one day, scrape rust from a knife, add a few drops of cold water, grind the rust into a liquid using the head of a chopstick, and instill onto the lesion. Frequent application will resolve it.
[Referring to pterygium, the above formulas may also be used]: Apply raw white honey to the eye, lie supine for half an hour, then wash off. Do this once daily for spontaneous recovery.
Alternatively, take three cherries (Yingtao), remove pits, fry, grind into powder, roll in paper, burn, and fumigate the affected area to dissipate the condition.
If there is a sensation of insects crawling in the eye with unbearable itching: Grind *Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix* (Qianghuo), calcined alum (Kufan), and borax (Pengsha) into a fine powder. (It must be free of residue when tasted with saliva to be suitable). Mix with saliva [to form a paste?].
