The song states: Maling Gao (Hemp and Coolness Ointment) shares the same efficacy as Tiegu San (Iron Band Powder). It contains Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Sheng Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), and Yeyutou (Colocasia Esculenta Corm). With Furongye (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium) used in large quantities as the main ingredient, applying it externally eliminates pain from carbuncles and sores.
(Ingredients) Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix) (4 liang), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) (4 liang), Sheng Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (2 liang), Yeyutou (Colocasia Esculenta Corm) (4 liang), Furongye (Hibisci Mutabilis Folium) (4 liang).
(Preparation) Grind all ingredients into a fine powder for future use.
(Usage) For Yang-type toxic conditions (Yang syndrome characterized by heat and excess), mix with wine and apply topically. For Yin-type toxic conditions (Yin syndrome characterized by cold and deficiency), mix with vinegar and apply topically. If the skin is broken, mix with refined vegetable oil (Qingyou) and apply topically. In the absence of Yeyutou, the root bulb of Narcissus tazetta var. chinensis (Shuixianhua Genban) can be used as a substitute.
Another usage: For Yin-type toxic conditions, add Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), grind into a fine powder, mix with vinegar, and apply topically.
This formula is most suitable for conditions involving mixed Yin and Yang syndromes. When fresh herbs are difficult to obtain, "Nanxing San" (Arisaema Powder) can be used as a substitute. The formula consists of Sheng Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) (1 liang), Chao Baijiezi (Semen Sinapis Album Preparatum) (3 qian), and Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (5 fen). Grind them into a fine powder, mix with half pig bile and half honey, and apply topically. Its efficacy in reducing swelling and dissipating nodules is no less than that of Maling Gao.
The song states: Jiedu Gao (Detoxification Ointment) contains few ingredients, relying mainly on Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Xiangyou (Sesame Oil), and Fen Tuo (Lead Carbonate/Plumbum Subcarbonatum), along with Tao Zhi (Peach Twig), Huai Zhi (Locust Twig), Liu Zhi (Willow Twig), Sang Zhi (Mulberry Twig), Jijie (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba), Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Shan Jia (Manis Squama), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra). It is lamentable that many physicians use overly complex prescriptions; rarely does one see an ointment cure severe or chronic diseases.
(Ingredients) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma), Chuanwu (Aconiti Radix), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1.5 qian); Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Ejiao (Colla Corii Asini), Haizao (Sargassum), Shan Jia (Manis Squama), Kunbu (Eckloniae Thallus), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Xuyutan (Capilli Humanus Carbonatus), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shiyan (Lepidolite), Haidai (Laminariae Thallus), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Tao Zhi (Peach Twig), Liu Zhi (Willow Twig), Sang Zhi (Mulberry Twig), Shan Zhi (Fir Twig), Tianding (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos), Mituoseng (Plumbum Subcarbonatum) (each 1 liang); Shuifen (Cerussa Preparata) (4 liang, stir-fried), Huangdan (Lithargyrum) (3 liang), Xiangyou (Sesame Oil) (8 liang).
(Preparation) Cut the above herbs into slices. Heat the sesame oil in a pot. Add the aforementioned herbs (excluding Xuyutan, Huangdan, Mituoseng, and Qianfen) and fry until they become charred. Strain and filter out the dregs. Then add Qianfen (Lead Carbonate, pre-stir-fried), Xuyutan, Mituoseng, and Huangdan. Continue heating until the oil turns pitch black and forms beads when dropped into water. Stop heating and store in a jar for future use.
(Usage) Spread the ointment on soft paper and apply it to the affected area.
Initially, because this formula was taught by my master, I used it frequently. Later, I tried other versions of the prescription to compare efficacy. However, after trying several formulas consecutively, their effects were comparable. To simplify the prescription, I adopted the following formula instead, which yielded more ideal results.
Alternative Formula Ingredients: Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) (3 qian), Bailian (Ampelopsis Radix) (3 qian), Fanmubie (Strychni Semen) (1 liang), Lufengfang (Vespa Nida) (3 qian), Shetui (Ophichthidis Skin) (1.5 qian), Shan Jia (Manis Squama) (3 qian), Qianfen (Lead Carbonate) (1 liang), Mituoseng (Plumbum Subcarbonatum) (1 liang), Sang Zhi (Mulberry Twig), Huai Zhi (Locust Twig), Tao Zhi (Peach Twig) (each 30 cun), Xuyutan (Capilli Humanus Carbonatus) (a ball size of a chicken egg), Machixian (Portulacae Herba) (5 jin, boiled to extract juice and added).
Combine all herbs, place in a pot with 1 jin of sesame oil, and fry until charred. Strain out the dregs. Then add Qianfen and Mituoseng, and continue heating until the mixture forms beads when dropped into water. Store for future use. This ointment can be applied to any type of Yang-syndrome sore or toxin, showing excellent efficacy. Sometimes, Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) and Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) are added.
