Whenever a disease is complicated by wind-cold pathogens, one should immediately abstain from meat, fish, and greasy foods, and take mild diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) herbs. Wait until the external pathogens are completely eliminated, then use nourishing foods to tonify the body. Generally speaking, the convalescence of carbuncles and swellings cannot do without rich, nourishing foods, as animal products can generate human flesh and blood. However, one must not consume them in excess, lest the cloying nature of meat overpower the transformative power of grain. One must also avoid raw, cold, and qi-stagnating foods, for fear of damaging the Spleen and Stomach. It is also advisable to avoid wind pathogens, refrain from anger, reduce overthinking, speak little, and prioritize cautious preservation of health. Regarding post-illness care: for severe toxicity, one should avoid sexual intercourse (symbolized by staying away from curtains/bedchambers) for three years; for mild toxicity, for one year. Violating these taboos may lead to deficiency consumptive diseases, hemiplegia, or a shortened lifespan; thus, caution is essential. Other precautions such as avoiding anger and shielding from wind should be kept in mind as if one were still ill.
The above ten methods constitute the general principles for treating carbuncles and back sores. Major issues can be addressed through them, and minor ones understood. Throughout my life, I have specialized in treating external conditions, and my core methodology lies entirely herein. It is concise yet comprehensive, accurate and practicable. The names of various diseases affecting the entire body are detailed below for reference.
(Duixin Fa, Shenshu Fa, Dajian, Shoufa, Zu Fa)
A sore arising on the back is called "Fabei" (Back Sores). It is caused by Fire-Toxin in the Lung Meridian. A sore arising on the lower back, opposite the heart, is called "Duixin Fa" (Opposite-Heart Sores). It is caused by Fire-Toxin in the Heart Meridian. A sore arising on the waist is called "Shenshu Fa" (Kidney-Shu Sores). It is caused by Ministerial Fire-Toxin in the Kidney Meridian. If it arises on the shoulder ridge, it is called "Dajian" (Shoulder-Hanging). The right side corresponds to Lung Fire, and the left side to Liver Fire. A sore arising on the dorsum of the hand is called "Shoufa" (Hand Sores). A sore arising on the dorsum of the foot is called "Zufa" (Foot Sores). These are caused by Damp-Heat-Toxin in the Spleen Meridian. Some resemble lotus seeds with multiple protruding heads; others resemble honeycombs with multiple depressed pores. Externally forming snail-shell-like crusts, these two types require vigilance against toxin sinking inward. Generally, these conditions arise from rich and fatty diets, or from the invasion of Six Exogenous Pathogens externally and the stagnation of Seven Emotions internally. Accumulation fails to disperse, causing Ying-Qi (Nutritive Qi) to fail to flow smoothly and become reversed within the muscle tissue. Upon initial perception of swelling and pain, medication should be used to dissipate it. If dissipation fails, moxibustion and other methods to extract pus should be employed. Carbuncle and ulcer conditions begin as Heat syndromes in the interior and end as Cold syndromes in the interior; this distinction must not be overlooked.
