Hand and Foot Web-Space Toxic Sores
Toxic sores in the hand web-spaces are generated by the abnormal flow of Qi and Blood in the Hand Meridians. Toxic sores in the foot web-spaces are generated by the abnormal flow of Qi and Blood in the Foot Meridians. Those occurring in the dorsal web-spaces involve the Yang-Wei (Three Yang) Meridians, while those in the palmar/plantar web-spaces involve the Yin-Wei (Three Yin) Meridians. It is necessary to clearly distinguish which meridian is affected. Treatment should employ the method of supporting the interior and regulating the middle jiao, adding herbs that guide the medicinal action to the specific meridian. Externally, apply poultices to confine the toxicity and prevent its spread. The condition will stabilize once pus is discharged. It is best to eliminate the pathogen internally as early as possible.
Fetal Hernia Sores (Tai Yu Chuang)
Some newborns present with one or two large holes on their backs at birth. If there is a membrane inside covering and protecting the Zang-Fu organs, the infant can survive; if there is no membrane and the Zang-Fu organs are exposed, death occurs immediately without hope of rescue. If a membrane is present, administer Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to the mother; the infant, through breastfeeding, will naturally heal and grow. There are cases where the infant survives but dies between three and five years of age.
Damp-Toxic Sores
Sores caused by damp-toxicity all occur on the lower legs, ankles, dorsum of the feet, and heels. Initially, they present with slight itching, and scratching causes fluid exudation. If left untreated for a long time, they fail to heal. Internally, administer damp-draining herbs. Externally, mix Bo San (Cypress Powder) with honey and apply it to the lesion; it will heal after one or two applications.
Internal Dan (Nei Dan)
"Dan" refers to the red color, resembling cinnabar applied within the flesh, hence named Internal Dan. The skin appears swollen like a board. If it occurs at points such as Yuanli (GB24) or Jingmen (GB25), either on the left or right side, it belongs to the Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian. Cases presenting within one or two days are treatable. However, if the pain extends to the waist and umbilicus with cyanosis and severe pain, accompanied by obstruction of urination and defecation, the condition is untreatable and death is inevitable.
Flying Stove Dan (Fei Zao Dan)
Scholar Xu stated that these ten types of Dan toxicities stem from toxins acquired in the womb. If not treated within three days, the toxicity attacks the intestines and stomach, leading to certain death. It is urgent to identify the type carefully. Once the specific Dan is identified, treatment should follow the corresponding formula. This Flying Stove Dan begins with redness, swelling, and luster on the top of the head. Immediately apply a mixture of fresh juice from scallion white (Cong Bai) and powder of Bletilla rhizome (Bai Ji) to the area, which will lead to recovery.
