Youfeng (Oil Wind) manifests as patchy hair loss, with shiny skin and itching sensation resembling insect crawling. This is caused by wind-heat pathogens attacking the body when deficiency exists, resulting in blood's failure to nourish and moisten the tissues. Treatment should involve internal administration of Shenyang Zhen Dan (Divine Response Nourishing True Pill) to cultivate the root, and external washing with Hai Ai Tang (Sea Mugwort Decoction) to treat the branch symptoms.
Shenyang Zhen Dan: Treats conditions where wind-cold, summerheat, and dampness invade the three Yang meridians, causing blood vessels to fail in nourishing and circulating, leading to empty itching of the skin, loss of eyebrows and hair, and shiny skin. (See section on Thigh)
Hai Ai Tang
Ingredients: Hai Ai (Sea Mugwort), Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower), Bohe (Mint), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Ben (Ligusticum or Chuanxiong, kept as original term), Huoxiang (Patchouli), Jingjie Sui (Schizonepeta Spike), Gansong (Nardostachys Rhizome), Manjingzi (Vernonia Seed) (each 5 qian).
Usage: Decoct with five bowls of water and pour into a basin. First fumigate the affected area, then wash after the temperature is suitable.
Baixiefeng (White Dandruff Wind) arises within the hair, face, eyes, ears, and neck. Initially presenting with slight itching, it eventually produces white scales that layer up and fly off, regenerating after removal. This is transformed from wind-heat due to skin heat exposed to wind. Treatment should involve oral administration of Qufeng Huanji Wan (Wind-Dispersing Muscle-Replacing Pill).
Qufeng Huanji Wan: Treats Baixiefeng, Zi Bai Feng (Purple and White Wind), Wanfeng (Stubborn Wind), Wan Xuan (Stubborn Tinea), damp-heat sores and scabies, and all itching sores that persist for a long time, heal, and recur.
Ingredients: Weilingxian (Clematis Root), Shichangpu (Acorus Rhizome), Da Humma (Large Sesame Seed), Heshouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum Root), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Kushen (Sophora Root), Cangzhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) (equal parts); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizome), Gancao (Licorice Root) (half dosage).
Usage: Grind the above herbs into powder. Use Xin'an wine to mix and form pills the size of mung beans. Take 2 qian per dose, washed down with warm boiled water. Avoid triggering foods and strong liquor.
Yujisan (Jade Skin Powder): Used for washing Baixiefeng, as well as freckles and acne caused by wind-dampness.
Ingredients: Lv Dou (Mung Bean) (0.5 sheng), Huashi (Talcum), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma) (each 2 qian).
Usage: Grind into powder. Use three spoons each time when washing the face.
Runji Gao (Moisturizing Muscle Ointment): Treats Baixiefeng, Youfeng, and itching caused by alopecia areata and white patches.
Ingredients: Mayou (Sesame Oil) (4 liang), Danggui (5 qian), Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi) (1 qian).
Usage: Soak for three days. Simmer over low heat until withered. Remove dregs. Add 5 qian of Huangla (Yellow Beeswax), melt, and pour into a bowl. Apply to the affected area.
Tuochuang (Baldness Sores) present with white crusts forming individual grains that do not connect. In contrast, Gan Chuang (Gan Sores) present with yellow crusts forming patches with pus, which serves as the distinction. The head is the summit of all Yang meridians, and sores belong to Fire; this condition results from the burning interaction of two Yangs. The treatment method must resolve accumulated heat and guide away irritability of the Heart Meridian. Therefore, it is appropriate to use Fangtong Sheng San (Wind-Barrier Universal Powder). All ingredients should be soaked in wine, baked dry, and ground into powder. Take three doses daily, adjusting the amount according to age. Mix with warm boiled water and take after meals. Efficacy is indicated by sweating on the head. Externally, apply medicines for killing insects and dispersing wind. If insects die, itching stops; if wind disperses, hair grows; if blood flows, spots become moist. Subsequently, rub the affected area with Runji Gao dipped in fresh ginger slices, and hair will grow. Avoid wind-aggravating triggering foods.
Maijian San (Wheat Paste Powder): Treats Tuochuang with layered white crusts and itching like insect crawling. First, decoct Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf) and Ge Fen (Pigeon Droppings) in water, and wash clean the crusts. Next, wash with fat pork soup. After a while, the insects will emerge naturally. Then, mix Maijian San with Zhizhu Hua You (Rhododendron Flower Oil) and apply. Wear a hat. Pain and swelling will follow; endure them. After three days, the crusts will gradually fall off, and new hair will grow. Abstain from all triggering foods.
Zhizhu Hua You Formula (Rhododendron Flower Oil Recipe): Take 4 liang of Zhizhu Hua roots, crush them. Simmer in one bowl of vegetable oil until withered. Remove dregs. Add a small amount of Huangla (Beeswax). Cool and mix with the previous medicine. Or, dip green cloth in this wax oil and apply three to five times daily. It can heal in three days.
Maijian Formula (Wheat Paste Recipe): Use one sheng of wheat, stir-fry until withered and yellow. While hot, place in a mortar. Mix with 4 liang of Liuhuang (Sulfur) and 1 liang of Bai Pi (White Arsenic). Grind into fine powder and mix evenly. Wait until cool, then remove. Add 0.5 jin of Yan Jiao (Smoke Glue), 3 liang of Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), and 2 liang each of Sheng Kubai (Raw Alum). Grind into fine powder. When using, wash the area with Scallion Soup. Mix with Sesame Oil for application. Cover with oil paper and tie tightly. Change once every three days. Three applications result in cure. This formula is also very effective for treating pediatric pox-related sores.
Huagai San (Imperial Canopy Powder): Cook glutinous rice until soft, mash into paste. Shave the bald area clean. Apply the rice paste thickly. The insects will all enter the rice paste. Wait for the paste to detach naturally, and new hair will grow. Alternative method: Grind Bai Yuan Dou (White Vicia Bean) into powder. Mix with water to form a paste. Apply thickly (one finger thickness) to the head. Wrap with cloth and tie tightly. When the bean evaporates and heats up, pain will be felt. Remove the medicine. This is also effective.
Shusuan Gao (Mouse Garlic Ointment): Treats Bai Tu (White Baldness) and various sores, scabies, and tinea with white crusts.
Usage: Grind mouse droppings into powder. Pound garlic and mix into an ointment. Apply to the affected area.
