When insects enter the ear, rub a cat's nose with fresh ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). The cat will excrete urine; collect this urine and drip it into the ear. The insect will exit on its own, resulting in a cure. No other prescriptions are as effective as this. If sesame oil is used instead, the insect may die inside, making removal difficult. If an insect has been in the ear for a long time, feeding on the brain and causing cephalalgia, use peach leaves (Persicae Folium) as a pillow; the insect will exit through the nostrils. For insects entering the ear, drip blood from the comb of a rooster into the ear.
For frostbitten ears, extract juice from fresh ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), boil it down to a paste, and apply it topically. Avoid using fire to warm or hot water to soak the area, as this causes tissue necrosis. Refer to the section on Chilblains for further reference.
Regarding meridians: The nose is the opening of the Lung. Qi from the five zang organs enters the nose and is stored in the Heart and Lung. If there is pathology in the Heart or Lung, the nose becomes obstructed and dysfunctional.
Bi Yuan (Nasal Sinusitis/Ozena): Characterized by the flow of turbid nasal discharge, yellowish, watery, foul-smelling, and putrid fluid. It is also known as Brain Collapse or Brain Leakage. Prolonged cases lead to persistent dizziness and vertigo. The Classics state: "If Gallbladder heat shifts to the Brain, it causes Bi Yuan." Aggravation upon exposure to cold indicates Fire stagnation. Medical texts state that the Gallbladder and San Jiao (Triple Burner) are treated similarly regarding Fire. Therefore, treatment should first clear the Upper Jiao, then suppress Fire and nourish Water (Kidney Yin), while simultaneously regulating the Lung and Liver. Clearing the Upper Jiao often employs acrid-cool herbs such as Schizonepeta (Schizonepetae Herba), Mint (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemi Flos), Forsythia (Forsythiae Fructus), Cimicifuga (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Burdock (Arctii Fructus), and Gastrodia (Gastrodiae Rhizoma). Suppressing Fire and nourishing Water involves herbs like Rhinoceros Horn (Rhinocerotis Cornu - *note: substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Asparagus Tuber (Asparagi Radix), Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Radix), Cinnabar (Cinnabaris), Ginseng (Ginseng Radix), Schisandra (Schisandrae Fructus), Poria (Poria), Chinese Yam (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Moutan Bark (Moutan Cortex), and Licorice (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma). Regulating the Lung uses Lung Pipa Leaf (Eriobotryae Folium), Platycodon (Platycodonis Radix), Asparagus Tuber (Asparagi Radix), Ophiopogon Tuber (Ophiopogonis Radix), Burdock (Arctii Fructus), Trichosanthes Root (Trichosanthis Radix), and Bamboo Sap (Bambusae Caulis in Taedia). Clearing the Liver and Gallbladder utilizes Bupleurum (Bupleuri Radix), Ligusticum (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bamboo Shavings (Bambusae Caulis in Taedia), Ziziphus Seed (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), and Antelope Horn (Saigae Tataricae Cornu). In my treatment of Brain Leakage (Bi Yuan), adding a large pinch of Sandalwood slices (Santalum Album Lignum) to the symptomatic prescription yields consistent success.
Qishou Huoxiang Decoction: Treats deficiency and persistent dizziness caused by Bi Yuan.
Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) with stem and leaves, 9 qian. Boil in one bowl of water until reduced to 0.7 parts. Mix evenly with one male pig gallbladder bile. Take after meals. Severe cases resolve within three doses. Alternatively, grind Huoxiang into powder, mix with boiled pig bile paste to form pills. Take 2 qian per dose, washed down with plain warm water on an empty stomach.
For chronic cases with deficiency, concurrently administer Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) and Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) to nourish the source of transformation.
Tianluo San: Treats Bi Yuan accompanied by cephalalgia, named Kongnaoshan (Brain-Controlled Sand), attributed to insects feeding on the brain.
Take 3-5 chi of Si Gua Teng (Luffae Caulis) near the root, burn until carbonized but retaining nature, and grind into powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, mixed with yellow wine.
Madouling San: Treats Bi Yuan.
Madouling (Aristolochiae Fructus), 5 qian; Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), 3 qian; Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus), 1 qian; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), 1 qian.
Boil in two zhong of water until one zhong remains. Add a little brown sugar. Take warm before bed for a cure.
Baiji Wan: Grind Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma) into powder, bind with rice paste made from wine, and form pills. Take 3 qian per dose, washed down with yellow wine. Recovery occurs within half a month.
