Swelling of Crane's Knee Wind (He Xi Feng) occurs at the knee. The upper and lower limbs appear emaciated and thin due to deficiency of the Foot Three Yin meridians (Liver, Spleen, Kidney). Wind, cold, and dampness pathogens invade when the body's resistance is weak. Symptoms include: pain and aversion to cold indicate dominance of cold; tendon spasm and contraction indicate dominance of wind; flaccid tendons and weakness indicate dominance of dampness.
[Note] This condition is also known as "Wandering Knee Wind" (You Xi Feng) or "Drum-Beating Wind" (Gu Chui Feng). When contracted after dysentery, it is called "Dysentery Wind" (Li Feng). Unilateral occurrence is mild; bilateral occurrence is severe. If neglected for a long time, the knee becomes swollen and coarse, while the thighs and calves become emaciated and thin. This arises from deficiency in the Foot Three Yin meridians, allowing wind, cold, and dampness pathogens to invade, resulting in this disease. Hidden pain and cold sensation inside the knee indicate excess cold; urgent tendon contraction indicates excess wind; relaxed tendons and weakness indicate excess dampness. In the early stage, swelling feels soft like cotton, skin color remains unchanged, and there is no heat sensation, but pain increases daily. Whether unilateral or bilateral, it is appropriate to take Wuji San (Wuji San, Five Accumulations Powder) to induce sweating; subsequently take Wanling Dan (Wanling Dan, Ten Thousand Spirits Pill) to warm and disperse, and apply Huiyang Yulong Gao (Huiyang Yulong Gao, Restore Yang Jade Dragon Ointment) externally; commonly take Huangu Dan (Huangu Dan, Bone-Replacing Pill) or Lang Wan (Lang Wan, Scorpion Pill) to expel pathogens. If the condition persists for a long time without resolving and shows signs of impending ulceration, it is appropriate to take Duhuo Jisheng Tang (Duhuo Jisheng Tang, Angelicae Pubescentis Decoction with Multisepal Starflower Root) or Da Fangfeng Tang (Da Fangfeng Tang, Major Saposhnikovia Decoction) to tonify and warm. For severe pain, add Ruxiang (Frankincense). After ulceration, if white serous fluid frequently oozes, and although the superficial skin is necrotic, pain and swelling persist, corrosive medicines should not be used. Instead, use Furong Ye (Hibiscus Mutabilis Leaf) and Juhua Ye (Chrysanthemum Leaf), each 5 qian, grind into fine powder, mix evenly with barley rice paste, and apply as a poultice to relieve pain. Alternatively, steam tofu dregs until hot, shape into cakes, and apply; this is also effective. This condition belongs to the refractory category of external diseases and is difficult to cure.
