Appendix: Ten Rules for Naming Sores and Ulcers in Various Surgical Conditions
Illustration 1 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Lianzi Fa (Lotus Seed Eruption) — Characterized by a shape resembling the head of a lotus seed, mostly protruding. Prognosis is good (survival) if swelling is high and pus forms upon ulceration; prognosis is poor (death) if it is flat, collapsed, and sunken with Yin characteristics.
Illustration 2 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Fengke Fa (Honeycomb Eruption) — Resembles a honeycomb, with the head containing screw-like structures, rotting in patches, and oozing pus from each pore. Prognosis is good if red and vibrant; prognosis is poor if black and sunken.
Illustration 3 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Jing Ju (Well Carbuncle) — Caused by reckless movement of Heart Fire. Prognosis is good if red and highly swollen; prognosis is poor if hard and purple-black.
Illustration 4 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Yuzhen Ju (Jade Pillow Carbuncle) — Formed by stagnation of Damp-Heat in the Bladder. Prognosis is good if red and swollen; prognosis is poor if purple and sunken.
Duixin Fa (Opposite Heart Eruption) — Caused by boiling Heart Fire and stagnation of Damp-Heat. Prognosis is good if swollen, high, and undergoing putrefaction/ulceration; prognosis is poor if soft, sunken, and purple-black.
Illustration 5 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Yao Ju (Premature Death Carbuncle) — Arises from blazing Yang Fire. Prognosis is good if red, crimson, and highly swollen; prognosis is poor if purple-black and flat/sunken.
Illustration 6 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Gusu Ju (Bone-Attaching Carbuncle) — Initially presents as pain in the tendons and bones of the thigh. After a long time, diffuse swelling occurs with pus discharge; prognosis is good if the pus is yellow and thick; prognosis is poor if Qi fails.
Illustration 7 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Duikou (Mouth Opposite Carbuncle) — Formed by the aggregation of Damp-Heat in the Taiyang channel. It is highly swollen, prone to suppuration, and prone to putrefaction/ulceration.
Illustration 8 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Shirong Syndrome (Loss of Prosperity Syndrome) — Occurs around the ears and in the neck. Initially resembles phlegm nodules; over time, it becomes hard and gradually enlarges like a stone. After rupture, there is no pus, only bloody fluid, and hardness persists with abnormal swelling and pain. This is a critical condition with a mortality rate of nearly 100%.
Illustration 9 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Erhou Fa (Behind-Ear Eruption) — Prognosis is good if there is a head and high swelling; prognosis is poor if there is no pus and it is soft/sunken.
Illustration 10 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Tuoju (Falling Off Carbuncle) — Shaped like millet grains, colored like red dates. If this occurs, out of every hundred patients, not one can be saved.
Illustration 11 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
Pidu Yong (Spleen-Belly Abscess) — Caused by consuming heavily fried, roasted, and rich flavors. Prognosis is good if red, crimson, highly swollen, and ulcerating; prognosis is poor if purple-black, flat, and sunken with Yin characteristics.

Illustration 13 of Carbuncles and Ulcers
High swelling indicates Yong (Abscess); deep ulceration indicates Ju (Carbuncle). Presence of pus indicates survival; absence of pus indicates death.
