之其功奇甚捷。
Use one jin (approx. 500g) of lead, place it in a small pot, and melt it over charcoal fire. Throw two liang (approx. 60g) of white arsenic (Bai Pi) onto the molten lead and refine until the smoke is exhausted. Take out, allow to cool and solidify, open the container; the gold-top arsenic (Jinding Pi) will be condensed on the surface of the lead. Remove and set aside for use.
Use half a jin (approx. 250g) of clean mirabilite (Puxiao), melt it in a pot over charcoal fire, boil until it turns red and dries up. Stop the fire, allow to cool and solidify, then take out to form saltpeter (Xiaoshi). Store in a jar for use. It is suitable for excess heat syndromes but not for deficiency heat syndromes.
Use toads, regardless of size, as their secretion (Su) is medicinal. Use wide-tipped copper tweezers to pinch the slightly tense skin above the supraorbital ridge of the toad, extract the secretion, and collect it in the tweezers. If the amount is large, scrape it off and dry it in the shade for use. The toad from which the secretion has been taken should be kept away from wind for two days, then returned to a grassy garden, where it will naturally survive without harm; if exposed to wind or water immediately after extraction, it will develop tetanus (Poshangfeng) and die from convulsions.
Besides one liang (approx. 30g) of large aconite root (Fuzi), prepare several more according to the prescription. Soak them in urine from an uncircumcised boy (Tongbian) to a depth of three cun, changing the urine daily. Soak for three days in summer and five days in winter. Then change the urine again and boil until the aroma of two fragrant substances dissipates. Remove the skin and umbilicus, string with thread, and dry in the shade, or sun-dry until hard. Store for use.
Two liang (approx. 60g) of mercury (Shuiyin), melted with one liang (approx. 30g) of lead, add mercury and set aside. Two liang (approx. 60g) of nitre (Huoxiao), two liang (approx. 60g) of green vitriol (Lvfan), and two liang (approx. 60g) of alum (Mingfan) are ground into powder together, put into a pot to melt, stir-fried until dry, then finely ground together with the mercury. Place into a clay-lined protective pot, cover with an iron lid, secure the sides with soft iron wire tied tightly using iron beams and pockets. Seal the mouth with mud made from purple soil and salt according to the method. It must be baked until extremely dry. Place on a stand with three nails, build a hundred-eye furnace. Add a base fire layer of two cun thick. Ignite one stick of incense for mild fire, another for medium fire, and another for strong fire: Keep a small pot of boiling water nearby, dip a brush in the water to wipe the inside of the iron lid frequently to keep it moist but not dry. After the time equivalent to three sticks of incense has passed, remove the fire and pot. Wait until the next day to take out and open the vessel to retrieve the medicine. If it condenses like powder on the bottom of the lid, scrape it off to obtain Ling Yao (Spirit Medicine). Store for use. For chronic ulcers that fail to heal, grind this medicine finely and sprinkle a small amount on the wound; the ulcer will heal easily. If added to general astringent medicines, its efficacy is remarkably swift and miraculous.
