A patient suffered from toothache. Taking Qingwei San (Clear Stomach Powder) was ineffective, and taking Liangge San (Cooling Chest Powder) aggravated the condition. A patient suffered from swelling of the cheeks and jaw, extending to the gums. The pulse at the right guan position (You Guan Mai, right cun-guan-chi pulse position corresponding to spleen/stomach) was rapid. This was due to wind-heat attacking upward from the stomach meridian. He was treated with Xijiao Shengma Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Cimicifugae Decoction), and the swelling subsided. (This diagnosis was based on the pulse and symptoms.)
A woman frequently suffered from oral and lingual ulceration, red cheeks, dry lips, dry eyes, and thirst. Her pulse was rapid, but became choppy upon deep pressure (Se Mai, choppy pulse). This was caused by heat accumulation in the heart and lungs affecting qi and blood, known as Relao Syndrome (Heat Consumption Syndrome). She should have taken more yin-nourishing and blood-supplementing medicines. Desiring quick results, she used cold-purgative medicines to attack the pathogen. Later, she developed into a consumptive disease and died.
Liangfang states: A woman's Relao Syndrome (Heat Consumption Syndrome) is caused by heat accumulation in the heart and lungs damaging qi and blood, leading to disharmony of qi and blood, stagnation of zang-fu organs, and internal accumulation of heat toxins that cannot be vented. Its manifestations include mental restlessness, red cheeks, headache, dry eyes, dry lips, intense heat in the four limbs, incessant irritability and thirst, sores in the mouth and tongue, lethargy, drowsiness with little sleep, loss of appetite, generalized body ache, occasional palpitations, occasional night sweats, and gradual emaciation of the skin and muscles. Hence, it is called Relao Syndrome (Heat Consumption Syndrome).
