嘉靖辛丑五月朔旦桷续题
Upon viewing this portrait, one appears humble and obscure. His countenance is gentle and pure, his appearance clear and bright. In his heart lies benevolent medical art, and he favors Confucian classics. Though his hair has turned white, his hands do not cease (referring to writing or practicing medicine).
In daily life, he dares not seek fame while violating righteousness; in social interactions, he dares not speak one thing while thinking another. He strives to avoid vulgarity in his actions and ensures his etiquette aligns with the ancient Confucians. He is modest, frugal, and simple, preferring to distance himself from the foolish, seeking neither renown nor prominence, content to dwell in a humble cottage. He would rather yield to propriety than be constrained by power. Those who do not know me call me arrogant; those who do know me call me peaceful and indifferent. Alas, looking back at my conduct, it may not fully accord with the Great Way. Yet, in moments of haste, I restrain my thoughts, seeking only a clear conscience.
Let me ask Master Lin, what is your name? Upon close inspection, you seem unlike anyone specific. You resemble Shi Shan Jushi (Scholar Shi Shan) by about three parts. You possess a pure mind and abundant spring-like vitality, yet you do not chase after apricot blossoms flying away. Listening to others say, "This is that Master Lin," like Lu Yuan and Bian Que reborn in this age.
Li Xun from Jingshan inscribed *Jin Tang Chun*:
Ancient in appearance but bright in heart, gentle in speech and steadfast in action. He savors the essence to strengthen his daily life, despising opportunistic climbing and refusing steps toward high office. Learning is for self-cultivation; medicine is for saving people. In poverty, he does not lose his natural state; in adversity, he does not deviate from constant principles. Thus, he becomes a great figure of his generation, inspiring admiration from all directions.
Cheng Wenjie Shizhou wrote at Shuai Xi Academy in Xiuyang:
With the face of Emperor Shun and teeth like shells, jade-like constitution and cinnabar-red lips. His breadth of mind swallows the marshes of Yunmeng; his heroic spirit surpasses the clouds of Cangwu. His learning allows him to trace the interests of Hetu and Luoshu; his medical skill approaches the truth of Qibo and Huangdi. He enters and exits creation, commanding spirits and ghosts. He feels a poignant affection for misty streams and rocky landscapes, yet stops short of the official career's soaring journey. His inspiring words can turn back the raging waves already overturned; his heaven-returning medical skills have preserved many colleagues from epidemic diseases. Regarding divine strategies and grand plans, I have grasped but a fraction. The act of giving life to the dead and flesh to bones has saved countless individuals. His virtue, like the divining grass, is unending; his longevity, like Qiao and Song, is just arriving. This surely reflects the subtle mastery of Lu and Bian, how could Wang Wei (Mojie) describe his intimacy?
Student Chen Jue (courtesy name Weiyi) from Shishi bows and inscribes:
The Master's surname is Wang, given name Ji, courtesy name Shengzhi, pseudonym Shi Shan. His family has resided for generations in Pusu, Qi County, Huizhou. In his early years, he entered the county school as a student. His nature was extremely filial. Thinking that those who serve their parents must understand medicine, he became proficient in medical arts, and many relied on him for survival. Mr. Li from Jingshan's biography is already detailed. His authored works include *Suwen Chao*, *Bencao Huibian*, *Maijue Kanwu*, *Tuiqiu Shiyi*, *Shanghan Xuanlu*, *Waike Lili*, *Yunqi Yilan*, *Douzheng Libian*, *Shishan Yi'an*, and *Zhenjiu Wendu*, totaling several volumes circulated in the world. The Master was born at the hour of You on the 16th day of the 9th month in the Guiwei year of Tianshun, and passed away at the hour of Xu on the 4th day of the 12th month in the Jihai year of Jiajing.
On the first day of the 5th month in the Xinchou year of Jiajing, Chen Jue added this inscription.
