Add Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), which becomes Bayi Tang (Eight Substance Decoction), also known as Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction). The treated symptoms are detailed below.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 4 liang), Moutan Cortex (Mudanpi, 3 liang), Natrii Sulfas (Mangxiao, 2 liang), Persicae Semen (Taoren, 50 pieces).
Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in water and take orally.
Treats all types of carbuncle toxins, whether severely painful, painless, or numb. If painful, moxa until pain ceases; if painless, moxa until pain is felt. Thus the toxin dissipates. Fire promotes free flow and draws out stagnant toxins; this is a contrary treatment method. It has the power to revive the dying.
Peel garlic, slice it to the thickness of three copper coins, place on the sore. Apply moxa cones on the garlic. After three moxa burns, replace the garlic and continue moxing. For un-suppurated lesions, it cures immediately; for suppurated ones, it reduces the severity significantly, preventing harm. If the lesion is large, mash garlic and apply to the affected area, cover with moxa and burn. Replace when the garlic spoils. This method is especially suitable for painless lesions, those failing to suppurate, those failing to rise, or yin sores, where more moxing is indicated.
Treats carbuncles with accumulated heat, irritability, preference for cold drinks, pain, a full pulse, and constipation or difficult urination/defecation.
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, stir-fried), Red Paeonia Root (Chishao), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (each 2 qian).
Add two zhong of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths. Take before meals.
Treats carbuncles that have ulcerated with thin pus, or fail to ulcerate and heal. These are due to deficient Yuan Qi unable to circulate and transport. Take this formula to generate blood and boost Qi, strengthen the Spleen and Stomach, and tonify various deficiencies. [It treats] ulcerative fever, aversion to cold, pain, excessive pus, spontaneous sweating, night sweats, flowing abscesses (Liuzhu), scrofula (Luoli), groin abscesses (Biandu), lesions that fail to suppurate over a long period, or suppuration that fails to ulcerate and heal. If there is insufficient Blood and Qi, and nodular swelling has not yet formed pus, add Aurantii Fructus (Zhiqiao), Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu), Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) and take them; the swelling will resolve spontaneously.
Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui), Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Dihuang, steamed with wine and baked), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), White Peony Root (Baishao, stir-fried), Poria (Fuling), Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (Baizhu, stir-fried), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, stir-fried with salt water), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, mixed with wine, each 1 qian), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, honey-fried, 5 fen).
