For *ju* (deep-seated suppurative infection), moxibustion is indicated rather than cauterization; for *yong* (superficial suppurative infection), cauterization is indicated rather than moxibustion. For *danliu zhongdu* (acute diffuse red, swollen, hot, and painful condition), soaking in water is appropriate. If the skin is swollen, shiny, and soft, it should be punctured with a needle to drain the pathogenic factors. The techniques for treating sores generally do not exceed these methods, yet each has its specific indications. Therefore, the *Shenghui Fang* states: Once confirmed as a *ju* sore, one should immediately apply moxibustion, 100 to 200 moxa cones, with each cone the size of a mung bean. After extensive moxibustion, if there seems to be pain, after one night, this is because the fire energy penetrates downward, and the heat within the swelling is guided by the fire and expelled with it, which explains why this occurs. If the sore itches, it is appropriate to apply moxibustion through a fermented soybean cake. This cake must be made by mixing Sichuan pepper, ginger, salt, and scallions, pounding them into a paste, and shaping them into cakes, with a thickness equivalent to three folds of a coin. Place the fermented soybean cake on the head of the sore and apply moxibustion. If it feels too hot, lift the cake and place another one on top; replacing it with a fresh one is even better. If the sore is painful, urgent moxibustion is required, and using a larger number of moxa cones is preferable. If pus has already formed, moxibustion must strictly be avoided; instead, puncture it with a needle to drain the pus, and recovery will follow. If various sores fail to heal for a long time and transform into fistulas, sulfur moxibustion is indicated. The method is as follows: Take a piece of sulfur matching the size of the sore and place it on the wound. Take a small amount of sulfur, heat it until red-hot on a fire, pick it up with the tip of a hairpin, and touch it to the sulfur on the wound repeatedly three to five times, continuing until the pus dries up and the condition heals. If a *fabei* (severe carbuncle on the back) first appears, the aforementioned cake moxibustion method should be used. Initially, if one feels unusual pain and itching on the back, confirming it as a *fabei*, take clean earth, mix it with water, and knead it into a cake, one inch in diameter and two fen thick. Place it directly on the sore and apply moxibustion using an moxa cone. Replace the cake with a new one for each moxa cone. When the sore is the size of a millet grain, apply five to seven cones; when the sore is the size of a copper coin, apply moxibustion day and night without stopping, until healed. The above methods are all based on this text and have been personally verified one by one, hence they are recorded. I believe that surgeons, from childhood to old age, must document all their experiences. I once recalled treating severe sores associated with *ganji* (infantile malnutrition/parasitic disease) where other doctors failed. Using *qilao* (larva of scarab beetle), cutting off both ends, placing it on the sore, and applying moxibustion, changing it every seven cones, using no more than seven larvae, proved effective in all cases. Another method: use *qihuopo* insects for moxibustion, following the same procedure. This has been repeatedly verified as miraculous, but people keep it secret, often not passing it down from father to son. Another method: crush red-skinned garlic, form it into a cake, and apply moxibustion exactly as with the fermented soybean cake method, which is even better.
