(Also known as "Big Head Typhoid".)
Redness and swelling of the head and eyes, especially severe around the ears, with unbearable pain. Accompanied by fever and aversion to cold, a sensation of blockage in the throat, trismus (lockjaw), thick and sticky nasal discharge and saliva, and difficulty in eating and drinking. Use Tuoli Wenjing Tang (Supporting Interior and Warming Meridian Decoction). Take according to the prescription. Wrap the head with thin clothing, cover the body with thick blankets, and lie in a warm place to warm the meridian blood, open the couli (pores and skin texture), dissipate cold qi, and raise yang qi. After profuse sweating, the swelling will reduce by eight or nine tenths. At this point, remove Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), add Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) and Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), and complete recovery will ensue.
1. During times of famine when epidemic qi is prevalent, for those suffering from the aforementioned symptoms where infection spreads among every household, treat according to the methods described later for Facial Shidu (Seasonal Toxic Swelling on the Face).
Tuoli Wenjing Tang (Supporting Interior and Warming Meridian Decoction)
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (5 fen or 8 fen) Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (5 fen) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Gange (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian)
Boil the above ingredients in two zhong of water until one zhong remains, then take orally. Lie in a warm place; once sweat occurs, the pathogen will dissipate. Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) may be added if necessary.
(When ulcerated for a long time, it is called "Mole Cricket String".)
The lesion arises within the hair of infants. The mass is not red. Initially, it is often mistaken for swelling due to trauma. Awareness only comes when the swelling becomes high and painful. Physicians generally consider the head to be a Yang region, so Xiaojin Dan (Little Golden Pill) should be used for treatment. Three doses at the initial stage can eliminate the swelling. Seven pills after ulceration lead to cure. Apply Yanghe Jiening Gao (Yanghe Resolving Hardness Plaster) externally. If decoctions can be taken, Jiawei Baoyuan Tang (Modified Baoyuan Decoction) with added Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) yields particularly good results.

(Also known as Hairline Sore.)
Occurs on the head and the hairline at the back of the vertex. The top is white flesh with redness underneath, resembling grapes. Pain feels like needle pricks, itching feels like burning fire. Upon rupture, pus flows out. It may also spread into the hair. This condition primarily affects obese individuals and is caused by internal dampness stagnation. It is suitable to apply Huangxiang Bing (Huangxiang Cake/Patch).

Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (1 liang) Ruxiang (Olibanum) (3 qian)
Grind each ingredient into powder separately and mix them. Mix with water boiled from Huaihua (Sophorae Flos) to form a cake/patch for external application.
