Book: Waike Jiyan Fang (Collected Effective Formulas for Surgery) Author: Zhao Yizhen Dynasty: Ming Dynasty, Hongwu Wuwu Year Chapter: General Formulas for Five Types of Carbuncles and Ulcers (3/4) Category: Formula
*Xuejie Tang (Dragon's Blood Decoction)*
Xuejie (Dragon's Blood, 1 qian), Chansu (Toad Venom, 3 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 5 fen), Xionghuang (Realgar, 5 qian), Qingfen (Calomel, 3 qian), Ruxiang (Frankincense, 1 qian), Moyao (Myrrh, 1 qian).
Take one dou three sheng of buckwheat straw ash or genuine charcoal ash, leach with water to obtain eight or nine bowls of ash liquor. Boil using chestnut wood or mulberry wood, first with strong fire then mild fire, until reduced to three bowls. Reserve one bowl, and place the other two bowls in a fine porcelain vessel to cool. Grind the aforementioned seven herbs into an extremely fine powder and add them to the ash liquor. Stir clockwise with an iron ladle or mulberry/willow branch. Add one sheng of fine calcined gypsum (Duan Shigao) to the medicinal ash liquor and stir evenly. Remove and let cool overnight. Store in a small white porcelain jar. For any malignant sores, apply directly to the center of the sore head twice a day, and once more on the following day. The sore head should be eroded and broken open by about five fen, with blood and fluid oozing out, which is ideal. To prevent the medicine from drying out over time, use the reserved ash liquor...
*Zhidu Wujin San (Poison-Expelling Black Gold Powder)*
Treats malignant flesh in sore openings, toxic ulceration with pus and blood discharge.
Badou (Croton Seed, 5 qian), Hanshimian (Cold Food Flour, 1 liang), Haoxi Mo (Fine Ink Stick, 1 piece).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with water and dough to make cakes. Wrap the Badou securely inside the cake without letting air penetrate. Roast over strong and mild fire until deep black, then grind into a fine powder. Apply according to the size of the sore. Mix with bile to form pellets. Grind with fresh water for application. Scrape and apply five to seven times for best results.
*Jiedu Wan (Detoxifying Pills)*
Treats various pathogenic heat, carbuncles, ulcers, swelling, toxic sores, muscle spasms, night sweats, teeth grinding, and palpitations. Suitable for all types of heat toxins.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome), Qianniuzi (Burdock Fruit), Huashi (Talcum), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) [All above are 5 qian; Dahuang, Qianniuzi, Huashi are each 1 liang].
Grind into fine powder. Make pills with water drops, sized like sophora seeds. Take thirty pills per dose with warm water. Reduce dosage for deficient patients.
*Wulong Gu (Black Dragon Bone)*
(Also known as Wujin San / Black Gold Powder)
Treats all swelling, toxic carbuncles and ulcers, and收敛s red halos.
Mubiezi (Chinese Momordica Seed, shell removed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) [Each 2 liang], Xiaofen (Starch, 4 liang), Caowu (Aconitum Cauliflower Root, 0.5 liang).
Stir-fry the above ingredients in an iron pot over slow fire until scorched. Grind into fine powder and remove "fire toxicity" by further grinding. Mix with water to a suitable consistency. Apply around the sore, leaving the top center open to allow toxic gas to escape. Alternatively, mix with vinegar.
*Tounong San (Pus-Penetrating Powder)*
Treats various carbuncles and subcutaneous abscesses that have not ruptured. Without using needles or knives, one dose will cause natural penetration shortly after administration. Proven effective through repeated use.
Emkoujian (Silkworm Cocoon Head): Use cocoons from which moths have emerged.
Burn the cocoons into ash. Mix with wine and take orally to induce penetration. Do not burn and take two or three cocoons at once; taking one causes only one sore opening, while two or three cause multiple openings. Do not neglect this caution.
*Tongmen San (Passage-Opening Powder)*
Treats all carbuncles, ulcers, and boils with painless swelling.
Dahuang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome, 2 liang), Muli (Oyster Shell, stir-fried, 5 qian), Shanzhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 3 qian), Dilong (Earthworm, earth removed, 3 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root, stir-fried, 5 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Take 5 qian per dose with one cup of water, decoct until reduced to 60%, strain, and take warm. Stop when bowel movement occurs.
*Ruxiang Baidu San (Frankincense Poison-Expelling Powder)*
Treats all sores, swelling, carbuncles, and ulcers; disinfects.
Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, peeled, 2 liang), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root, cleaned, 2 liang), Digupi (Dogwood Root Bark, 2 liang), Ruxiang (Frankincense, separately ground, 2 qian), Moyao (Myrrh, separately ground, 2 liang).
Grind into fine powder. Mix with well water to form a paste. Spread on paper and apply to the swollen area. Effective.
*Lixiao San (Rapid-Efficacy Powder)*
Effective for back carbuncles, various carbuncles and boils, and scrofula. Also effective for women's mastitis when alternated with the previous formula.
Zise Zaojiaoci (Purple Gleditsia Thorn, half jin, not dried, finely cut and stir-fried until red), Sheng Fugcao (Raw Licorice Root, 2 liang), Ruxiang (Frankincense, separately ground, 0.5 liang), Moyao (Myrrh, separately ground, 1 liang), Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit, five fruits, peel removed, flesh and seeds crushed, stir-fried yellow, do not dry-fry).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose mixed with warm, clear wine. Take at any time.
*Shengji San (Flesh-Generating Powder)*
Constricts sore openings.
Muxiang (Costus Root), Binglang (Areca Seed), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, washed and trimmed).
Equal parts. Grind in a clean vessel and sieve into fine powder. Apply frequently to sores. If the sore is ulcerated, after applying this powder, cover with common plaster or Yunmu Gao (Cloud Mother Plaster) to allow pus to drain naturally. If the sore does not close after using this powder, mix Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome) powder and Qingfen (Calomel) in small amounts, apply evenly, and rapid healing will occur.
*Huangqi Liuyi Tang (Astragalus Six-Ingredient Decoction)*
Regular consumption can prevent carbuncles and ulcers for life. Also treats excessive thirst and tonifies deficiency.
Mian Huangqi (Milky Astragalus Root, 6 liang, cleaned of forks and rhizomes. Half raw-baked and finely cut, half moistened with salt water, steamed over rice three times, baked dry, and finely cut.) Fugan (Licorice Root, 1 liang, half raw finely cut, half honey-fried and finely cut.)
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose in the morning and noon, mixed with plain boiled water as a drink. Mixing with a little wine during drinking is especially good. Another prescription uses raw Huangqi 6 liang and Gancao 1 liang, chopped, decocted in water for regular consumption. This is why ancients referred to Huangqi as "mutton."
*Xuan Du San (Dispersing-Toxin Powder)*
For initial onset or after moxibustion, apply as a patch to reduce swelling and gather red halos.
Lufengfang (Honeycomb, stir-fried until scorched, 3 liang), Nanxing (Arisaema Tuber), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean) [Each 1 liang], Xiaomi (Millet, 1 he), Sheng Caowu (Raw Aconitum Cauliflower Root, 1 fen), Sheng Baifan (Raw Alum, 1 fen).
Grind into fine powder. Mix with light vinegar and apply to the four sides. Reapply when dry.
*Moxibustion Method*
For early-stage small carbuncles/ulcers, within one or two days, quickly slice a garlic clove horizontally like a coin, place it on the center, and apply small moxa cones for five moxibustion units (zhuang). If the shape is slightly larger, soak yellow stalk paper in wine and apply fully. Identify the first drying spots as the "meridian roots," and moxa there, or moxa both if both dry first. Limit to five to seven zhuang. Another method: Curl fingers and press around the perimeter. The painful spot is the root. Press deeply here; if relief is felt, moxa here. Moxa other areas if necessary. If severely swollen, crush garlic into a cake, bake dry, dip in legal vinegar, heat via moxa, and replace frequently. Or use a warming iron on the garlic cake, replacing with hot cakes frequently. If the lesion spreads, cover with silk to prevent qi leakage, then apply medicine later. When a carbuncle expands like a turtle, observe the head direction. Moxa the front two legs first, then the tail or red veins. If tight and long, moxa from the end. Leave the head and rear two legs unmoxed. If all are moxed, fire qi will accumulate, toxins will have nowhere to disperse, and may attack inward. If identification is unclear, use Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root, 3 fen), Hanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), Sangbaipi (Mulberry Root Bark, each 1 fen), and ten pieces of green onion white with roots. Decoct in fresh water, add half a cup of sour vinegar, and wash. Soon, the meridians will appear, allowing verification of head and tail.
*Baidu San (Poison-Expelling Powder)*
General for carbuncle and ulcer swelling and nodules. Disperses and induces suppuration.
Nanxing (Large Arisaema Tuber, 1 liang), Caowutou (Aconitum Cauliflower Root), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) [Each 0.5 liang], Mubiezi Ren (Chinese Momordica Seed Kernel, one, ground).
Grind into fine powder. Divide into two doses. Mix with legal vinegar and honey for application. Cover with gauze.
*Juandu San (Eliminating-Toxin Powder)*
Treats carbuncle and ulcer swelling. Disperses if not yet formed, induces suppuration if formed. Expels wind and drains pus.
Da Nanxing (Large Arisaema Tuber, 1 liang), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb, 3 fen), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Zhi Jiangcan (Silkworm, baked, each 0.5 liang), Xionghuang (Realgar, 2 qian).
Grind into fine powder. Initially mix with vinegar for application; later mix with honey water.
*Tuidu San (Retreating-Toxin Powder)*
General for carbuncle and swelling.
Mubiezi (Chinese Momordica Seed, oil removed), Da Nanxing (Large Arisaema Tuber), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, raw), Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root), Caowu (Aconitum Cauliflower Root, with skin and tip, equal parts).
Grind into fine powder. If hard, mix with legal vinegar; if hot, mix with honey water.
*Shengong Miaotie San (Divine Merit Miraculous Patch Powder)*
Apply within the halo of carbuncles and ulcers to transform pus and blood into fluid, gathering the halo and containing toxins.
Da Nanxing (Round and white Arisaema Tuber), Bamazi Ren (Castor Seed Kernel) [Each 4 qian], Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis, pale red), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber, raw), Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root, tip slices), Jianghuang (Turmeric Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Baiji (Bletilla Rhizome) [Each 3 qian], Moyao (Myrrh), Ruxiang (Frankincense) [Each 2 qian], Huarui Shi San (Flower Stamen Stone Powder, 2 packets).
Grind into fine powder. Mix with well water and honey for application. If the sore color is dark and dull, mix with ginger juice. Apply from the edge of the halo inward, leaving a coin-sized area in the center for a plaster. If the sore opens widely, spread the medicine entirely on gauze. Cut two pieces of white bamboo leaf tail from an old tea basket to match the sore's shape. Place on the medicine first, then on the sore. Bamboo leaves from old grass roofs also work. Bamboo leaves release moisture to help the medicine act. All medicines must be fine powder to avoid pain.
*Wanbing Jiedu Wan (Ten-Thousand-Disease Detoxifying Pills)*
Treats carbuncles, back carbuncles, fish-navel toxic sores, drug toxicity, plant toxicity, peach-tree toxicity, snake venom, insect venom, tuberculosis worms, and various malignant diseases.
Wenge (Clam Shell/Galla Chinensis, 2.5 liang), Shancigu (Cremastra Pseudobulb, 1 liang, washed and baked), Hongya Daji (Red-Stemmed Euphorbia Root, 7 qian), Quanxie (Whole Scorpion, 5 qian), Dashandougen (Belamcanda Rhizome), Xuisui Zi (Spurge Seed Kernel, oil removed, frost taken, each 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Musk, 1 qian), Zhusha (Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar) [Zhusha and Xionghuang each 2 qian].
First, pound the first five ingredients in a wooden mortar and sieve into fine powder. Then grind the last four ingredients and mix together. Make pills with glutinous rice paste, dividing into thirty-five pills. Prepare in a clean room on Dragon Boat Festival, Qixi, Double Ninth Festival, and Laba Day. Take one pill per dose, ground with ginger and honey water, or soaked in well water and applied to the affected area. Detoxifies and heals sores; miraculous for saving lives. Zhusha and Xionghuang are among the "Five Poisons" used by surgeons to attack ulcers.

During preparation, do not allow women, chickens, dogs, cats, or厌恶 people near.
Xuan Shen (Scrophularia Root, 0.5 liang), Mian Huang Qi (Milky Astragalus Root, 3 fen), Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, skin and tip removed, cut, 1 liang), Quan She Tui (Whole Snake Slough, washed in salt water, baked, 0.5 liang), Nanzi Luannfa (Man's Loose Hair, washed and baked dry, 0.5 liang), Lufengfang (Honeycomb, cleanly cut, 1 liang, stir-fried if containing bee larvae), Huang Dan (Refined Minium, 5 liang).
Use 1 jin of true sesame oil. Put hair and oil in a silver pot. Boil over strong and mild fire until hair is scorched and melted. Add apricot kernels. When black, filter through fine cotton. Return the clarified oil to the pot. Add Xuan Shen and Huang Qi. Simmer slowly for 1-2 hours. Remove pot and place on a cold stove for half a day. When fire subsides, add Honeycomb and Snake Slough. Stir urgently with willow branch. Move pot back to fire. Stir continuously with willow branch over slow fire until purple-yellow. Filter through cotton. Return clarified oil to pot. While cold, add Minium and stir urgently for a moment. Move pot back to fire. Simmer over strong/mild slow fire. Stir continuously with willow branch for 1000+ turns. When oil turns black and drops form beads in water, the plaster is ready. If beads are thin, boil a little longer. Ensure proper consistency. Store in sealed porcelain vessel. If accidentally over-boiled and too hard, add a little wax to sesame oil, store in porcelain, steam over a steamer, and stir while hot for use. After making the plaster, keep the porcelain vessel in clean water for a week and night to remove fire toxicity. Rest for three days before use. Change twice daily, once at night. Making this plaster is difficult regarding fire control. Must patiently monitor fire intensity. Strong fire causes fire toxicity in the medicine, losing efficacy and injuring face/eyes. Cannot be rescued. Strictly beware. There are many plaster formulas, dozens in number. None are as miraculous for carbuncles as this one. Not exchanged for a thousand gold. Especially excellent for rod wounds.
*Wanjing Gao (Ten-Thousand-Gold Plaster)*
Treats carbuncles, back carbuncles, various sores and boils, falls from height, trauma/fractures, leg/knee sores, chronic sores, five types of hemorrhoids, and all malignant sores. Also said to specialize in back carbuncles, miraculous beyond words. If initially felt or forming a sore, use Ox Hide Glue. Boil to appropriate thickness. Spread on Mao Tou paper where the sore is felt or forming. Next, use two soft cloth pads. Boil in strong rice vinegar until hot. Squeeze out and alternate pressing onto the glue paper. Steam and iron while hot. Do not let pads cool. Do not squeeze both out at once. Always keep one pad boiling in vinegar. When one cools, take the hot one from vinegar to steam/iron, and put the cold one back in vinegar. This ensures constant hot pad replacement for steaming/ironing, leading to easy effectiveness. If the sore itches, it means the medicine is attacking the disease. Endure the itch; do not stop steaming/ironing. Wait until pus is almost gone. Then decoct Guan Zhong (Cyatheae Spore) soup strongly, wait for warmth, wash off glue paper. Next day, wash again as before. If pus remains, steam/iron again as before. Several days of steaming/ironing is fine, but stop when pus is clean and sore is dry. Then sprinkle Shengji Hongyu San (Flesh-Generating Red Jade Powder) on the sore and apply Wanjing Gao.
