To treat injuries from falls and blows, as well as Hong Kong foot (a condition characterized by swelling and weakness of the lower legs and feet) caused by cold-dampness invading the hands, feet, shoulders, and back, with unbearable pain; or pediatric Pi Gan (malnutrition due to spleen-stomach deficiency) causing diarrhea and dysentery; or children suffering from cough who refuse to take medicine.
Liqing (Asphalt, 2.5 jin) Weilingxian (Clematis Root, 2 liang) Bimazi (Castor Bean Seed, 100 seeds, peeled and ground) Huangla (Yellow Beeswax, 2 liang) Muguezi (Strychnos Nux-vomica Seed, 28 seeds, shelled, sliced, and ground) Moyao (Myrrh) Ruxiang (Frankincense, each 1 liang, separately ground) Mayou (Sesame Oil, 2 liang in summer, 3 liang in spring/autumn, 4 liang in winter).
First, melt the Liqing (Asphalt) and Weilingxian (Clematis Root) together in a pot, stirring with locust or willow branches until they turn scorched black. Filter through heavy silk gauze. Place the filtered asphalt into a basin of water to cool into a solid block. Remove and weigh to obtain exactly 2 jin of pure asphalt. Melt it again in the pot. Add Mayou (Sesame Oil), Huangla (Yellow Beeswax), Bimazi (Castor Bean Seed), and Muguezi (Strychnos Nux-vomica Seed) paste, stirring constantly with locust or willow branches. Use low heat. The mixture is ready when a drop does not stick to the hand in water and can be pulled into golden thread-like strands. If too hard, add a little more oil gradually; if too soft, add more asphalt. Once the consistency is correct, add the powders of Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh). Remove from heat and place over charcoal fire, stirring hundreds of times with locust branches. Filter the ointment through coarse cloth, pull it in a water basin until it forms golden threads, changing the water frequently. Soak for one day, then store in a small pot. For injuries from falling off horses or carts, apply the heated plaster to the painful area after warming it over fire; efficacy is confirmed when the medicinal power penetrates the bone and flesh. Bathe the area several times with hot water to help dissipate accumulated heat and blood. For pediatric Pi Gan (malnutrition), apply to the affected area. For diarrhea and dysentery, apply to the abdomen. For cough, apply to the back.
Xiyao Shenxiao San (Divine Nitre Powder for Washing)
Specifically treats ulcerated and foul-smelling carbuncles and sores.
Shechuangzi (Cnidium Fruit, 2 liang, crushed) Puxiao (Mirabilite, 1 liang).
Mix the two ingredients evenly. Use 3 qian per dose, boil in one bowl of water for three to five boils. Wash the sore with the warm solution while tolerable, then sprinkle the following powder onto the wound.
Shengxiao San (Holy Efficacy Powder)
Used to contract and close wounds.
Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark, 1 liang, coarse skin removed, finely cut, stir-fried until reddish-black) Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scale, 1 liang, stir-fried until yellow) Binglang (Areca Nut) Muxiang (Costus Root, each 0.5 liang, stir-fried until yellow) Ji Nei Jin (Chicken Gizzard Lining, 7 pieces, used raw).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Take a small amount; only after the pus has completely drained and the wound is cleaned, sprinkle the powder dry onto the sore.
Shanying Gao (Excellent Response Ointment)
Treats various malignant sores and swellings, such as Back Carbuncle (Fa Bei), Brain Carbuncle, Gingival Swelling, fractures from trauma, sprains, knife and axe wounds, syphilitic sores, snake and insect bites, dog and horse bites, burns and scalds, lacquer dermatitis, tinea versicolor, and ringworm. Application leads to immediate healing. Also treats "Blowing Breast" (acute mastitis) in women: form pills the size of Chinese honeylocust seeds, swallow 20 pills with fresh cold water. For Lung Abscess (Fei Yong) and Intestinal Abscess (Chang Yong), pills can also be swallowed, taken with warm wine, rice drink, or decoction of Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) and Gancao (Licorice Root). Avoid contact with hands that have touched meat products and do not bake over fire.
Shang Deng Huangdan (Top Grade Lead Monoxide, 8 liang, finely ground) Baijiaoxiang (Balsam Peru) Ming Moyao (Clear Myrrh) Di Ruxiang (Dripping Frankincense, all separately ground) Da Danggui (Large Angelica Sinensis Root) Chuan Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root) Xingren (Apricot Kernel, peeled and tip removed) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root) Caowu (Aconitum Carmichaelii Root) Chuanwu (Aconitum Kusnezoffii Root) Chishaoyao (Red Peony Root) Binglang (Areca Nut) Sheng Gan Dihuang (Raw Rehmannia Root) Tuxiong (Wild Ligusticum Root) Liqing (Asphalt, separately ground) Luafa (Human Hair, washed clean, each ingredient 1 liang).
Except for Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh), place the other herbs in a porcelain crucible with 1 jin of Sesame Oil and soak overnight. Simmer over low heat until the herbs turn black. Then add Scallion White and Human Hair and simmer briefly. Filter through raw silk gauze to remove dregs, reserving 1 liang of medicated oil. Re-boil the filtered oil over low heat, then add Huangdan (Lead Monoxide). Stir constantly with long willow and locust branches. When slight smoke rises, lift the crucible and drip the liquid onto water; if it condenses into beads that do not disperse, the ointment is formed. If beads do not form, continue boiling until the ointment is ready. Lift the crucible and stir until no smoke emerges. Add the powders of Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), and Baijiaoxiang (Balsam Peru), mix evenly, and pour into a ceramic vessel. Place the original soaking crucible inside the vessel. Change the surrounding fresh water daily. Situate the vessel in water for three days to remove "fire toxicity" before use. If the ointment is too hard, add an appropriate amount of Huangla (Beeswax) and Qingyou (Clear Oil) and mix well.
