Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 3 qian), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 1 qian), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 5 qian), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang).
Decoct in water and take for emergency rescue. This is true Cold Evil invading the interior; Kidney Fire is forced out of the body shell, and Yang Evil Qi directly attacks the Heart Palace, causing the Heart Sovereign to lose its guard. Why increase the dosage? Because Yuan Qi (Original Qi) has flown away and scattered, with only a thread of Qi remaining unextinguished. If purely using spicy-hot herbs like Cinnamon Twig, Prepared Aconite Root, and Dried Ginger are used, although the evil may be expelled outward, the righteous Qi will nearly perish. Without adding more Ginseng and Atractylodes, how can one restore the righteous Qi when it is on the verge of existence and non-existence?
If a person's hands and feet are cold, or they experience Jue Ni (Reversal Cold/Convulsions), or their body trembles with fear of cold, people assume it is Cold, but it is not Cold; rather, it is True Heat inside and False Cold outside. The formula uses:
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, 1 qian), Rougui (Cinnamon Twig, 1 qian), Renshen (Ginseng, 3 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodes, 5 qian), Zhu Danzhi (Porcine Bile, half), Kucai Zhi (Juice of Bitter Vegetable, 3 spoons).
First, decoct the medicine in two bowls of water. After cooking, place the medicine and vessel into water to cool them rapidly, [then] add bile juice and vegetable juice, mix evenly, and take in one go.
The formula contains entirely hot-natured medicines. If taken improperly, it will inevitably cause Deficient Fire to rush upward, resulting in complete vomiting. One must take the hot medicine cooled down; this already follows its nature, and moreover, the bitterness of the two juices descending further serves to deceive the defensive mechanisms along the false path.
Excessive Fire in the Upper Jiao causes spitting of phlegm like a gushing spring, red face, sore throat, and an unwillingness to cover the upper body with clothes, while the lower body is ice-cold. This is False Heat above and True Cold below.
Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, one piece), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, half jin), Shanzhuyu (Cornus Officinalis Fruit, four liang), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber, one liang), Bei Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry, one liang), Fuling (Poria, three liang), Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, three liang), Danpi (Moutan Bark, three liang), Rougui (Cinnamon Twig, one liang).
Decoct in ten bowls of water until reduced to four [or three] bowls. Cool and administer to the patient. [Take the dregs, add three bowls of water, decoct until one bowl remains, and take in one go]. Finish four bowls across two doses, and immediate calmness ensues. This is one method of treating upper diseases by addressing the lower part, and it is most effective.
