Qiwei Dihuang Wan (Seven-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill):
Fuling (Poria, 2 qian) Rougui (Cinnamon Twig, 1 qian) Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 1 liang) Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit, 4 qian) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 1 qian) Danpi (Moutan Bark, 1 qian) Shanyao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 1 qian) Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies not in promoting urination to treat the condition, but in specifically nourishing Kidney Water (Yin fluids of the Kidney). When there is sufficient water in the Kidney, the Qi transformation of the Bladder naturally proceeds. [This is because the opening and closing functions of the Bladder are governed by the Kidney.]
Another formula uses:
Oily human hair burned to ash and ground into powder. Take an amount that can be pinched between three fingers, add it to half a jar of hot water. Drink it; patency will be achieved immediately.
Yet another formula uses:
Fengmi (Honey, 1 zhong) Pinxiao (Mirabilite/Niter, 1 zhong, equivalent to 1 liang) Dahuang (Rhubarb Root, 1 qian) Huangjiu (Yellow Wine, 1 zhong).
Decoct until mixed together, take warm; very effective. This formula is the simplest.
This section distinguishes the color of blood in dysentery symptoms. If the blood is caused by Fire Evil (Pathogenic Heat), the color must be bright red, the pulse must be surging and rapid, the mouth must be thirsty with a desire to drink cold water, and urination must be difficult, painful, red, and turbid.
Later, a "Divine Formula for Treating Dysentery" was appended:
Yangsuke Qiao (Poppy Shell, 7 pieces) Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel, 7 slices) Wumei (Mume Fruit, 7 pieces).
Process all as usual, additionally Gancao (Licorice Root, 7 cun, half roasted/shengzhi) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 7 slices, half baked/wei).
Heidou (Black Soybean, 49 grains, half stir-fried/chao). Use one large bowl of well water, add to a small pot, cook thoroughly using alternating mild and strong heat, then drink. One dose stops pain; a second dose...
For cases of diarrhea occurring fifty or sixty times a day, where the intestines seem to pour out contents, undigested food passes through, the anus is swollen and painful, and the sensation is like fire heat, if no remedy is applied, death will ensue immediately. The appropriate formula is Jiexie Tang (Diarrhea-Cutting Decoction):
Yiren (Coix Seed, 2 liang) Zexie (Alisma Rhizome, 2 qian) Renshen (Ginseng Root, 3 qian) Baishao (White Peony Root, 2 liang) Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, 1 liang) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome, 5 qian).
Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, 1 liang) Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, 5 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula tonifies the Kidney and strengthens the Spleen, promotes urination to remove dampness, and is miraculously effective for treating diarrhea.
Fire Diarrhea (Huo Xie) involves undigested food passing through; food and drink are expelled immediately after entering the throat. Patients may have dozens of bowel movements daily, even up to a hundred. Everyone knows this is a Heat syndrome. However...
Regarding the urgency of the condition, it might seem appropriate to treat the branch (symptoms); yet treating the branch cannot suddenly subdue the Fire. It is necessary to urgently tonify the Water in the Kidney, providing a dwelling place for the Fire, so that it does not ascend uncontrollably. The appropriate formula is:
Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 3 liang) Shanzhuyu (Cornus Fruit, 1 liang) Gancao (Licorice Root, 1 liang) Fuling (Poria, 1 liang) Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed, 1 liang) Baishao (White Peony Root, 3 liang).
This formula consists of herbs that tonify the Kidney, not those that directly stop diarrhea; however, its miraculous effect in stopping diarrhea is as swift as a drumstick striking a drum. A truly divine and subtle formula.
