此方妙在用人参、肉桂,盖膀胱必得气化而始出。气化者何?必(乃)心包络之气也;
既用参
群药;况车前子、王不留尽下泄之药,服之而前阴有不利者乎?
[Regarding Dysentery] Abdominal painlessness indicates a Cold syndrome. The prescription is as follows:
Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 3 qian) Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 qian) Bo Zi (Fructus Brassicae, 1 qian) Zhi Qiao (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride, 1 qian) Bing Lang (Semen Arecae, 1 qian) Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The preceding formula is for robust individuals, where Fire pathogen combines with Dampness. [This formula treats Cold dysentery with abdominal painlessness.] For those with internal injury from overwork, or with deficiency-Cold of the Middle Jiao, where the Spleen fails to control blood resulting in bloody dysentery, one should use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) added with Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi); or use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) added with Shu Di Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae) and Chao Hei Gan Jiang (Stir-fried Black Rhizoma Zingiberis), which will lead to recovery.
[Regarding this symptom] People assume it is extreme dryness of the Large Intestine, who would know it is actually dryness of the Lung? [Because] when the Lung is dry, its Clear and Descending Qi cannot descend to the Large Intestine.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, 3 liang) Yuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae, 3 liang) Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 3 qian) Niu Nai (Cow's Milk, 1 bowl) Huo Ma Ren (Semen Cannabis, 1 qian).
Decoct in two bowls of water until reduced to six-tenths. Mix with cow's milk and take orally. After one or two doses, bowel movement will surely occur.
This formula does not focus on moistening the Large Intestine, but on tonifying the Kidney and greatly supplementing Lung Qi. Since the Large Intestine resides in the lower pathway and is difficult to treat alone, it must be moistened via the Kidney and cleared via the Lung. By opening the upper orifice, the lower orifice naturally flows and becomes unobstructed. This is a method of treating lower diseases by addressing the upper.
Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 5 qian) Gui Wei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda, 1 liang) Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, 5 fen) Mi (Honey, half bowl). Decoct in water and take orally.
In this formula, Da Huang purges and promotes defecation, while Dang Gui moistens; Dang Gui remains the Sovereign herb. Although it has a purgative effect, it is not extremely fierce, avoiding the detriment of Yin exhaustion; moreover, there is Sheng Ma...
For cases of chronic constipation following prolonged illness, this formula is suitable.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Radix Rehmanniae, 1 liang) Yuan Shen (Radix Scrophulariae, 1 liang) Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 1 liang) Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 5 qian) Huo Ma Ren (Semen Cannabis, 1 qian) Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1...)
When the Qi transformation of the Bladder fails, urinary retention occurs. One might think only the Bladder needs treatment, but the therapeutic approach lies entirely elsewhere than the Bladder itself. The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian) Lian Zi (Semnen Nelumbinis, 3 qian) Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian) Che Qian Zi (Semen Plantaginis, 1 qian) Wang Bu Liu Xing (Semen Vaccariae, 1 qian) Rou Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1...)
The brilliance of this formula lies in using Ren Shen and Rou Gui, because the Bladder requires Qi transformation to excrete urine. What is Qi transformation? It is necessarily the Qi of the Pericardium Collateral (Xin Bao Luo); since Ren Shen was used... along with other herbs; furthermore, Che Qian Zi and Wang Bu Liu Xing are all downward-draining herbs, so how could the anterior orifice be obstructed after taking them?
