When a person closes their eyes to sleep at night, they dream of struggles, defeat, and terror, states that are difficult to describe. People assume this is a Heart disease (Xin Bing). However, it is unknown that this is actually a pathology of the Liver Meridian (Gan Jing). This condition should not be treated with overly harsh or heavy tonics.
Furthermore, there is a condition where the Shen Spirit (Shen Qi) is unsettled. Upon sleeping, the Hun Soul (Hun) seems to fly away; one feels the body is in bed while the soul has left it. There is frequent fright palpitations (Jing Ji), many nightmares, and insomnia throughout the night. People generally attribute this to Heart disease. For this syndrome, Zhenzhu Mu (Pearl Mother Shell) should be used as the Sovereign herb, with Long Chi (Dragon Teeth) as an Assistant herb. Zhenzhu Mu enters the Liver meridian first among herbs; Long Chi shares the same nature as the Liver. Hu Jing (Tiger Eye) belongs to Metal, corresponds to the Lung organ (Fei Zang), and stores the Po Soul (Po). The Dragon can change, thus the Hun wanders and is unstable. The Tiger can remain still and quiet, thus the Po stays firm and guarded. Therefore, for treating unstable Po, Hu Jing is suitable; for treating wandering Hun, Long Chi is suitable. Each herb has its specific indication.
When a person suddenly faints, becomes unconscious, and has phlegm sounds in the throat, people assume it is Wind pathogen (Feng). Who would know it is due to Qi Deficiency (Qi Xu)? If treated as Wind stroke, death is inevitable. This is usually because of careless indulgence in sexual activities in daily life, leading to Essence deficiency which causes Qi deficiency; compounded by careless living habits, resembling being blown down by wind. The appropriate formula uses: Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, 1 liang), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fuling (Poria, 5 qian), Baijiezi (Brassicae Semium Album, 3 qian), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 2 qian), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, ...). This formula tonifies Qi without treating Wind, resolves Phlegm without consuming Qi; after one dose, the spirit settles; after two doses, the phlegm clears; after three doses, recovery is complete.
There is also a condition where the Water of the Kidney (Shen Zhong Shui) is deficient and cannot ascend to nourish the Heart; additionally, Liver Qi may be dry/hot and unable to generate the Fire of the Heart. These are all Yin Deficiency (Yin Xu) conditions causing difficulty in falling asleep. Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, 2 liang), Shanyuzi (Corni Fructus, 1 liang), Yuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 qian), Baijiezi (Brassicae Semium Album, 3 qian), Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix, ...). This formula tonifies Kidney Water, nourishes Lung Qi, calms the mind and opens orifices, clears Heat and resolves Phlegm, truly possessing miraculous effects. Another prescription uses Fuling (Poria, 5 qian); taking ten doses can cure the condition.
