This symptom appears to be panting, but it is not true panting; treating it as excess-type panting would lead to immediate death. This is because shortness of breath (Duan Qi) results from the depletion of Kidney Qi, with Qi rushing upward to the Upper Jiao and obstructing the Lung Meridian. The symptoms appear excessive but are actually deficient. The prescription is as follows:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang), Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix, 3 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian), Po Gu Zhi (Cibotii Rhizoma, 3 qian), Shan Yu (Corni Fructus, 3 qian).
Within three doses, the breathing becomes calm and panting subsides. The brilliance of this formula lies in the heavy use of Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), which can descend to the source of Qi and restore vitality from nothingness. The remaining herbs are purely tonifying, a wonderful method.
Observing that the symptoms seem severe but are actually mild, the prescription is as follows:
Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 3 qian), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 qian), Su Ye (Perillae Folium, 1 qian), Shan Dou Gen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine, 1 qian).
After one dose, the panting stops, and no further doses are needed. However, for excess-type panting, the breathing is extremely rapid, there must be sounds in the throat, and the shoulders must lift.
The breathing is scanty, there are no sounds in the throat, and the shoulders do not lift. This is due to severe deficiency of Kidney Qi and the impending exhaustion of Spleen Qi, causing Qi to rush upward, on the verge of collapse but not yet collapsed.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Shan Yu (Corni Fructus, 3 qian), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang), Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix, 1 qian), Bei Wu Wei (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus, 1 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 5 qian).
When a person suddenly contracts Wind-Cold pathogen, with Cold entering the Lungs, it leads to rapid panting, lifted shoulders, rebellious Qi, inability to expectorate phlegm, and inability to lie flat. The prescription is as follows:
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, 2 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 2 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, 2 qian), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix, 2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 qian), She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 1 qian), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
The brilliance of this formula lies in using Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), and Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) to soothe and disperse the Qi of Metal (Lungs), using Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Praeparatum cum Zingibere et Alumine) to eliminate phlegm, and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) to clear heat. Because external contraction of Cold pathogen... fire has not...
Another discussion on formulas: Whenever a person suffers from panting unable to lie flat, expectorating phlegm like a gushing spring, tongue not dry but panting does not stop, panting immediately upon lying down—this is not an external contraction...
