Spermatorrhea is a disease of the lower part; forgetfulness is a disease of the upper part. How can they be treated together and be appropriate? The prescription is: Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang), Lian Xu (Lotus Stamen, 2 liang), Qian Shi (Euryale Seed, 3 liang), Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 5 liang), Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit, 1 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 4 liang), Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed, 1 liang).
This condition of spermatorrhea is due to the deficiency of Kidney Water; its root cause is actually the weakness of the Heart Fire (Ministerial Fire/Heart Yang). By tonifying the Heart Monarch now, the Jade Gate (Jing Guan, gate of essence) will close naturally without being forcibly closed. [So-called...]
Diarrhea is a cold syndrome; acid regurgitation is a heat syndrome. It seems that cold and heat are distinct and treatment methods differ. However, one does not realize that although acid regurgitation manifests as heat, it arises from the stagnation of Liver Qi. [The treatment should soothe the Liver.] It is better to treat both conditions with one prescription for superior results. The prescription is: Chai Hu (Bupleurum Root, 1 qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, 5 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Chen Pi (Citrus Reticulata Peel, 5 fen), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed, 1 qian), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven, 5 fen), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian).
The brilliance of this prescription lies in Bai Shao's ability to soothe the stagnation of Liver Wood. Once the stagnation of Liver Wood is relieved, it no longer overacts on the Stomach above nor on the Spleen below. The prescription also contains Fu Ling and Che Qian Zi to drain [dampness].
Deficiency of Middle Qi and phlegm obstruction in the Middle Jiao, although seemingly different diseases of the middle, are essentially both caused by the deficiency of Middle Qi. Qi deficiency naturally leads to more phlegm production, and excessive phlegm inevitably consumes Qi. Although discussed separately, they are essentially united. [Prescription:] Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Ban Xia (Pinellia Tuber, 3 qian), Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, 3 qian), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 qian), Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 1 qian), decocted in water and taken orally.
Ren Shen is originally a divine agent for tonifying Qi and also a wonderful medicine for eliminating phlegm; Ban Xia and Nan Xing, although divine products for expelling phlegm, can also serve as correct medicines for supporting Qi; Fu Zi and Gan Cao, one benevolent and gentle, the other brave and vigorous, complement each other to achieve efficacy.
People consider this to be a deficiency of the Kidney, [but who knows] it is not only a Kidney disease but also a Heart disease. One should treat both the Heart and Kidney simultaneously. The prescription is: Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root, 5 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscorea Rhizome, 4 liang), Shan Yu Rou (Cornus Fruit, 4 liang), Fu Ling (Poria, 3 liang), Bei Wu Wei Zi (Schisandra Fruit, 1 liang), Rou Gui (Cinnamon Bark, 1 qian), Ba Ji Tian (Morinda Officinalis Root, 1 liang), Rou Cong Rong (Cistanche Stem, 1 liang), Fu Zi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 qian), Lu Rong (Deer Antler, 1 liang).
Grind all the above into fine powder, form pills with refined honey, [take 5 qian each morning and evening, washed down with plain water].
This prescription uses Shu Di Huang, Shan Yao, Shan Yu Rou, etc., to tonify the Kidney; Ba Ji Tian, Rou Cong Rong, Fu Zi, Lu Rong to tonify the Fire within the Kidney (Ming Men Fire); this would suffice. But why must one additionally add Ren Shen, Fu Ling, Bai Zi Ren, Mai Dong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Yuan Zhi (Polygala Root), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphus Seed)? Because the deficiency of Fire in the Kidney stems from the deficiency of Fire in the Heart; if one tonifies Kidney Fire without benefiting Heart Fire, it will instead increase the dryness and depletion of the Upper Jiao. To tonify Kidney Fire, one must necessarily tonify Heart Fire, so that Water and Fire will mutually support each other.
Another view adds Bai Shao (White Peony Root) at 3 liang to the prescription.
