Preface to Elixirs (Part 1)
The light and clear Qi ascends, while the heavy and turbid Qi sinks and condenses. The Way of Heaven condenses clear and bright Qi, scattering it to form stars; the spiritual essence of Earth contains transformative clear Qi, flowing into metals and stones.
**Yuzhi Dan (Jade Mushroom Pill)**: Treats all kinds of wind diseases, as well as blood and Qi disorders in women.
Ingredients: Heiqian (Black Lead, *Galena*) one tael, Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) one tael, Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) the size of one soybean, Yangqishi (Yangqi Stone, *Actinolite*) the size of three soybeans, Daizhe (Hematite, *Haematitum*) the size of two soybeans.
Preparation: First, melt the lead into liquid. Next, add the mercury and stir rapidly until uniform. Then add the remaining herbs. Grind the four herbs other than lead finely together. Gradually sprinkle this powder into the molten lead until exhausted. After further processing ("nourishing"), wrap in paper and take.
**Zifen Lingbao Dan (Purple Powder Spirit Treasure Pill)**: Treats wind pathogens in muscles and bones, replenishes essence and marrow, refreshes spirit, improves complexion, promotes longevity, and warms the Kidney organ.
Ingredients: Heiqian (Black Lead, *Galena*) four taels, Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) two taels (no separate preparation needed; same method as Yuzhi Dan above: for every two taels of mercury, add half a tael of Sulfur to form cinnabar-like grains).
Preparation: Perform "Fu Huo" (fixing fire/stabilizing properties) on the ingredients. Place Xiaoshi (Saltpeter, *Natrii Nitras*) in the center of a cauldron, piling it high so that powder flows down the sides to cover the bottom. Add the formed grains on top. Wait for cooling, then grind finely.
**Baijin Dan (White Gold Pill)**: Treats various wind diseases where wind pathogens do not dissipate, and hemiplegia.
Ingredients: Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) three taels (ground separately into powder), Cihuang (Orpiment, *Realgaris Ochratum*) one and a half taels, Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) one tael.
Preparation: Grind the two yellow substances (Orpiment and Sulfur) into powder. Melt them in a cauldron first, then add the Cinnabar powder and stir until uniform. Boil with Jiangzhi (Ash juice from mulberry branches) for three days and nights. Supplement melting... Form into pills.
**Qingjin Dan (Green Metal Pill)**: Treats wind-cold blood and Qi disorders.
Ingredients: Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*), Huangdan (Minium, *Massicot*), Qianfen (Lead White, *Cerussa*) each one tael.
Preparation: Place ingredients in a yinzi (small pot). First add Sulfur and melt. Then add Cinnabar and Mercury to form grains. Cool, then add Minium and Lead White. Mix... Remove. The medicine turns green-purple. Grind finely, spread on paper over moist ground for one shichen (two hours) to remove fire toxicity. Mix with Chijiazhi (Lithospermum resin) juice and flour to form pills the size of pea seeds. Take ten pills on an empty stomach with sour jujube seed decoction wine. Initial dosage must induce sweating; add half spoon each of Mint juice, Ginger juice, and Honey. Cover tightly to induce sweat.
**Fuhuo Shuiyin Liuhuang Zifen Dan (Fixed-Fire Mercury-Sulfur Purple Powder Pill)**: Treats all cold conditions, regurgitation/vomiting, cold-heat blood disorders, cold labor/wind injury, and all cold diseases. Highly effective.
Ingredients: Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) six taels, Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) two and a half taels, Zhensha (Iron Filings, *Limatura Ferri*) two taels (washed clean), Taiyin Xuanjing (Taiyin Crystal, *Gypsum Fibrosum*) two taels (ground).
Preparation: Grind Sulfur finely first. Add Mercury and a little hot water, grinding like mud. When Mercury stars disappear, place in a ding (tripod vessel) along with Xuanjing and Zhensha... Dry... Apply fire... Size of millet grain.
**Ziling Dan (Purple Spirit Pill)**: Treats cold qi affecting digestion, breaks up old blood and cold diseases in women. Highly effective.
Ingredients: Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) eight taels (imported, ground fine), Baiyanhua (White Salt Flower, *Sal Nitrificatum*) three jin (one and a half jin used daily, mixed with three sheng rice vinegar, sun-dried).
Preparation: Use a ding vessel. Pack white salt firmly, dig a pit in the center, add Sulfur powder, mix with rice vinegar, and cover with salt... Size of millet grain.
**Sibi Gui Zhusha (Four-Wall Cabinet Cinnabar)**: Dispels wind-cold, warms bone marrow, beautifies complexion. Long-term use prevents disease and extends life.
Ingredients: Zhensha (Iron Filings, *Limatura Ferri*) one jin, Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) four taels, Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) three taels, Baifan (Alum, *Alumen*) seven taels, Yan (Salt, *Sal*) one tael.
Preparation: Boil Iron Filings and Sulfur in fifteen sheng strong vinegar until dry. Stop fire. After vapors cease, cool and grind again. Separate... Wait for bottle... Two layers... Six taels... Basin... Bucket.
**Taiyang Zifen Dan (Sun Purple Powder Pill)**: Treats chronic cold in men, blood/cold labor in women, five diaphragm qi regurgitation, masses/patterns, and all cold diseases. All heal.
Ingredients: Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*), Mayaxiao (Saltpeter, *Natrii Nitras*), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) each three taels.
Preparation: Grind ingredients together in a mortar with non-fermented wine until Mercury stars disappear. Stop. Dry in sunlight. Spread in a cauldor... Porcelain bowl... One shichen... With date...
**Qinghua Dan (Blue Flower Pill)**: Treats cholera with abdominal distension, cold qi, heart pain, intestinal wind, blood/qi deficiency-cold, pediatric malnutrition/accumulation. Highly effective.
Ingredients: Kongqing (Azurite, *Azuritus*), Dingfen (Basic Bismuth Carbonate, *Bismuthi Subcarbonas*), Baishizhi (Kaolin, *Kaolinitum*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), Taohuashi (Peach Blossom Stone, *Chalcedonius*) each one tael, Yanhua (Salt Flower, *Sal*) four taels.
Preparation: Grind together like flour. Put in porcelain bottle, cover with salt. Seal tightly. When dry, apply one or two jin of fire around the bottle... Sun-dry... Sheep blood.
**Taiyang Liuzhu Dan (Sun Flowing Pearl Pill)**: Treats chronic cold wind patterns, mass accumulations, female blood disorders, leukorrhea (red/white), intestinal wind bleeding, chronic qi dysentery/masses.
Ingredients: Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) one jin, Mayaxiao (Saltpeter, *Natrii Nitras*) four taels, Yanhua (Salt Flower, *Sal*) four taels (stir-fried until color changes), Pengsha (Borax, *Borax*) two taels (fixed-fire).
Preparation: Grind together like flour. Pack into porcelain bottle. Cover with stir-fried salt. Remove yin qi. Seal tightly. Place in a ding... Furnace. Stop when red. Cool, remove. Resembles amber. Remove fire toxicity with cold spring water. Grind fine. Mix with date pulp to form pills size of mung beans. Take on empty stomach daily...
**Siling Dan (Four Spirits Pill)**: Preserves youth and tonifies.
Ingredients: Huangdan (Minium, *Massicot*), Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*), Gangtie (Steel, *Ferrum*) filed into powder, Pengsha (Borax, *Borax*) each two taels.
Preparation: Grind fine. Put in porcelain box. Seal tightly until dry. Place in ash furnace. Cover box with three cun of ash. Maintain one jin of fire... Hundred... Out.
**Siling Dan (Four Spirits Pill)**: Treats wind in tendons, opisthotonos, Kidney wind, heat-toxin wind, skin wind, great wind, sudden collapse wind. All treated. Its merit is like...
Ingredients: Pengsha (Borax, *Borax*) three taels, Shuiyin (Mercury, *Hydrargyrum*) one tael, Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) one tael, Liuhuang (Sulfur, *Sulfur*) three taels.
Preparation: Grind Borax and Sulfur like flour. Place in porcelain box. Seal tightly until dry. Enter ash furnace. Ash thickness three... Box... Steam two... Each.
**Fuhuo Xuanshi Guilingsha Dan (Fixed-Fire Dark Stone Cabinet Spirit Cinnabar Pill)**: Tonifies sinews and bones, preserves complexion, treats female wind-cold, warms uterus. Long-term use prevents aging and extends life.
Ingredients: Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) three taels (fine grind, wrapped in paper), Cishi (Magnetite, *Magnetitum*) one and a half jin (crushed, ground fine, washed to remove red juice).
Preparation: Mix Magnetite with twelve taels of Petroleum Ether (Shinao Oil) until absorbed. Seal a broken porcelain bottle tightly until dry. Put half the Magnetite inside... Pack tight... Do not seal yet... Wait for cold... Long time.
**Xuanying San (Xuanying Powder)**: Disperses wind-heat, benefits Sanjiao, resists cold/heat, preserves complexion. Long-term use eliminates myriad diseases.
Ingredients: Chuan Pu Xiao (Sichuan Mirabilite, *Natrii Sulfas*) five jin (burned in clay bottle until red-hot, ground fine like powder), Danzhuli (Bamboo Sap, *Succus Bambusae*) one sheng.
