The mouth and teeth are the gates of the zang-fu organs and the pivot of respiration. They receive flavors to nourish the stomach and intestines, and circulate body fluids to moisten the meridians. Therefore, the mouth is the external manifestation of the Spleen (Pi), and the teeth represent the flourishing state of the bones. This is of great importance to the whole body. Thus, the *Huangting Jing* (Yellow Court Classic) states: "The mouth is the Jade Pool, the Palace of Great Harmony; by rinsing and swallowing the spiritual fluid, disasters will not spread, and decay will be prevented." Furthermore, classics state: "The lips are the Flying Gate, the teeth are the Household Gate," and one should articulate the five tones to subdue various pathogens. All diseases originate from the mouth. Inhaling evil wind while swallowing saliva causes phlegm-fluids to stagnate in the diaphragm, leading to chest and heart congestion, with toxic vapors attacking and steaming internally. Over time, this薰 (xūn - fumes/steams) causes damage.
Investigating the root of these diseases reveals many types. For instance, in *gan* (canker/gum disease), the gums are soft and flaccid without pus or blood. Another condition called *chi* (gum erosion), when touching the gums, causes pus and blood to flow out. In oral *gan*, the gums bleed spontaneously without being touched. In wind-induced *gan*, there are small holes above the upper gums resembling a honeycomb. In tooth *gan*, the tooth bone becomes brittle and rotten. If the gums, lips, and mouth suddenly turn white or cyan-black, it indicates acute *gan*, which can lead to death within ten days if not treated urgently. First, examine the inner lips and cheeks for purple-red or cyan-black vessels; puncture them with needles to release evil blood, or cauterize them if necessary. If yellow-black substances resembling rotten bone appear attached to the teeth, each shaped like a tooth, they must be scraped off using a *gan* knife. Similarly, substances resembling cicada wings, egg membranes, or silk threads缠绕 (winding around) the tooth roots must also be removed with the *gan* knife. Otherwise, the gums will never adhere to the tooth roots again.
Regarding toothache, it is pain radiating from the tooth root. Teeth are the surplus of bones, nourished by marrow. The branch meridian of the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian enters the teeth. If the marrow qi is deficient...
