Teeth are governed by the Kidney (Shen). If the meridians and collaterals are full and robust, and the bone marrow is strong and vigorous, then the teeth will remain free from disease. However, if Qi and Blood are insufficient, allowing Wind pathogen (Feng Xie) to take advantage of this weakness, pathology ensues.
For toothache radiating to the cheek with swelling, use the Mangcao San (Mangcao Powder) formula:
Mangcao (Grassleaf Privetfruit Herb), 1 liang; Xixin (Asarum Root), 1 liang; Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), 0.5 liang, pith removed; Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Lateralis Radix), 1 qian, raw, skin and umbilicus removed; Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper Fruit), 1 fen, eyes and closed-mouth grains removed, lightly stir-fried to remove moisture.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take 0.5 liang each time, decoct in two large cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain the dregs. Hold the liquid hot in the mouth, spit it out when cool, and do not swallow.
For unremitting toothache with radiating pain:
Digupi (Lycium Bark), 1 fen; Sha (Sand/Gypsum - *Note: Term ambiguous in source*), 1 fen; Xixin (Asarum Root), 1 fen; Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root), 1 fen.
Crush the above ingredients, decoct in two cups of water until reduced to one cup. Strain the dregs. Add the powdered Sha. Hold hot in the mouth, spit out when cool.
