The throat and pharynx are generated from the Qi of the Lung and Stomach. The pharynx (Yan) is a hollow cavity that allows for the swallowing of food; it is also called "Ai" (Ya), primarily responsible for the smooth passage of fluids and food, serving as the pathway for Stomach Qi, thus referred to as the connection of the Stomach. The pharynx weighs ten taels, is two and a half cun wide, and extends one chi six cun in length to the Stomach. The larynx/trachea (Houlong) refers to its hollow nature; because it is empty inside, obstruction leads to choking, while patency prevents disease.
The throat and pharynx are pathways for the circulation of Qi, connecting above and below, serving as the respiratory route for the Zang and Fu organs. If the Zang and Fu organs are full but the Spleen and Lungs are congested, and Wind-evil or Heat toxins invade, it results in obstruction of the throat and pharynx, pain, and inability to swallow food and drink. It is appropriate to take Chuan Shengma San Formula.
