Discussion states: The South generates Heat. Heat generates Fire. Fire generates the Bitter taste. The Bitter taste nourishes the Heart. The Heart transforms Blood. Blood nourishes the Spleen. The Heart opens into the tongue. In Heaven it corresponds to Heat. On Earth it corresponds to Fire. In the body tissues it corresponds to vessels (Mai). In the Zang-Fu organs it corresponds to the Heart. In colors it corresponds to Red. In musical tones it corresponds to the Zhi tone. In vocal sounds it corresponds to laughter. In emotional changes it corresponds to sorrow (You). In orifices it corresponds to the tongue. In tastes it corresponds to Bitter. In emotions it corresponds to Joy (Xi). In odors it corresponds to Scorched. In insects it corresponds to feathered creatures. In fluids it corresponds to sweat. In virtues it corresponds to Propriety (Li). Its luster manifests on the face. Its filling is in the blood vessels. Among the Zang organs, it governs Spirit (Shen). The interaction of two essences is called Spirit. Spirit is the transformation and production of essence and Qi. Therefore, the Heart belongs to Fire and prospers in Summer. The Hand-Shaoyin [Heart] meridian is its channel, which combines with the Small Intestine [Hand-Taiyang] meridian (Note: Original text says "Hand-Yangming", likely a textual error for Taiyang, but translated as stated). The Small Intestine is a Fu organ and governs the exterior; the Heart is a Zang organ and governs the interior. Excess of Heart Qi leads to an excess of Spirit, resulting in pain in bones and flesh, fullness in the chest, pain in the hypochondrium, lower back, shoulder blades, and between both arms, and incessant laughter. This is an excess pattern of Heart Qi, and purgation should be employed. Deficiency of Heart Qi leads to pulling pain between the chest, abdomen, hypochondrium, and lower back, palpitations, mental confusion, lack of luster in the complexion, stiffness of the tongue root, and a tendency toward sorrow and grief. This is a deficiency pattern of Heart Qi, and tonification should be employed. In Summer, if the Heart pulse comes floating, large, and rapid, this is a normal pulse. If instead a deep, soft, and slippery pulse is obtained, this indicates the Kidney water overacting on Heart fire (Water overcoming Fire), which is a great reversal and difficult to treat. If instead a wiry and long pulse is obtained, this indicates the Liver wood overacting on Heart fire. Although the text mentions "mother overcoming son" (which contradicts standard Five Phase theory where Wood generates Fire), it suggests that although ill, recovery is expected. If instead a large and slow pulse is obtained, this indicates the Spleen earth overacting on Heart fire (Son overcoming Mother/Reverse Overaction), although ill, it is treatable. If instead a floating, choppy, and short pulse is obtained, this indicates the Lung metal overacting on Heart fire (Metal overcoming Fire), although ill, death will not occur. When the Heart pulse comes, linked continuously, with a slight curve within, it is called Heart disease. If the pulse comes curving forward and staying backward, like holding a belt hook, it is called a dead pulse. When the True Heart pulse arrives, firm and beating, like feeling a cluster of Coix seeds, with a dark red-black color lacking luster, and with brittle hair, it is a sign of death.
When the Heart is deficient, Cold is generated. Cold causes Yin Qi to flourish. Flourishing Yin Qi causes blood vessels to become deficient and scant, leading to much fear and dread, unhappiness, sudden pain in the heart and abdomen. There is frequent spitting of clear saliva, fullness in the heart and diaphragm, forgetfulness, much fright, flying dreams, dispersion of spirit and mind. If the pulse is floating and deficient, these are the signs.
