Humans suffer from five-organ malaria (malaria affecting the five zang organs), as well as various types of malaria characterized by alternating chills and fever, phlegm-rheum, "ghost" affections (ancient superstitious term for certain mental symptoms or intractable diseases), every-other-day paroxysms, and mountain miasma. Tracing the etiology, all these conditions arise from improper self-care, leading to a conflict between yin and yang qi, resulting in alternating chills and fever. Although the specific names and depths of the pathology vary, the therapeutic principles are largely similar. Now, one formula is provided to treat all such cases, hence it is called "Yi Qie Nue" (All Malaria).
**Formula for Yi Qie Nue with Divine Efficacy:**
* *Hu Tou Gu* (Tiger Skull Bone) [3 liang, coated with lard/su oil, roasted until yellow]
* *Zhu Sha* (Cinnabar) [1 liang, finely ground]
* *Heng Shan* (Dichroa Root / Radix Dichroae) [0.5 liang, chopped]
* *Gan Cao* (Licorice Root / Radix Glycyrrhizae) [0.5 liang, roasted until slightly red, then chopped]
* *Mu Li Fen* (Oyster Shell Powder / Concha Ostreae) [0.5 liang, processed until cracked, skin and navel removed, finely ground]
* *Tao Ren* (Peach Seed / Semen Persicae) [37 seeds, soaked in hot water, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernel seeds discarded]
Process: Pound and sieve the above herbs into powder. Mix with the already finely ground ingredients evenly. Blend with refined honey, pound and knead 200-300 times. Shape into pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 15 pills before meals, washed down with Tao Fu Tang (Willow Charm Decoction). Continue until cured.
**Another Formula:**
* *Hu Tou Gu* (Tiger Skull Bone) [1.5 liang, coated with su oil, roasted until yellow]
* *Pi Shuang* (Arsenic Trioxide / Realgar preparation involving arsenic) [1 fen, finely ground]
* *Tao Xin* (Peach Heart / Core of Peach Seed) [120 pieces, dried]
* *Tao Nu* (Old Peach Twig / Ramus Persicae) [7 pieces]
* *Lue Yue Zhu Xue* (Pig's Blood collected in the twelfth lunar month) [0.5 he]
* *Han Shi Mian* (Cold Food Flour / Flour used during Cold Food Festival) [0.5 spoon]
* *Wu Du Ri Zong Zi Jian* (Tip of Zongzi eaten on Dragon Boat Festival) [5 pieces]
Process: For the three ingredients—Tao Xin, Hu Gu, and Tao Nu—pound and sieve into powder. Grind all ingredients together evenly. This mixture must be prepared on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month before sunrise. Blend with millet rice flour to form pills the size of mung beans. Before the onset of the disease, take 2 pills with fresh cold water. Avoid hot foods.
**Zhu Sha Wan Formula for Intractable Yi Qie Nue:**
* *Zhu Sha* (Cinnabar) [0.5 liang]
* *A Wei* (Asafoetida / Resina Ferulae) [0.5 liang]
* *Ru Xiang* (Frankincense / Resina Olibani) [0.5 liang]
* *Pi Shuang* (Arsenic Trioxide) [0.5 liang]
* *She Xiang* (Musk / Moschus) [1 qian]
* *Chi* (Fermented Soybean / Semen Sojae Preparatum) [1 liang, separately ground into paste]
Process: Grind all ingredients to a fine powder. Blend with Chi paste and soft cooked rice to form mung-bean-sized pills. Take 4 pills per dose, washed down with boiled peach branch decoction. Administer two doses before the onset of the paroxysm. Vomiting indicates efficacy.
**Formula for Irregular Chills and Fever with Phlegm Retention:**
Indicated for Yi Qie Nue where chills and fever occur irregularly, accompanied by rebellious phlegm qi and inability to eat.
* *Hu Zhi* (Tiger Fat) [1 fen, melted]
* *Pi Shuang* (Arsenic Trioxide) [1 fen, finely chopped]
* *Xiong Huang* (Realgar / Realgar) [1 fen, finely ground]

* *Hu Sun Tou Gu* (Macaque Skull Bone) [1 fen, used raw]
* *Dan Sha* (Cinnabar) [1 fen]
Process: Pound and sieve into powder. Mix with finely ground ingredients. Add tiger fat and refined honey. Shape into pills the size of soap pods. For males, tie one pill with red silk on the left middle finger; for females, on the right middle finger. Sniff frequently.
**Tian Ling Gai Wan Formula for Mental Confusion due to Malaria:**
Indicated for Yi Qie Nue with alternating chills and fever, mental confusion, restlessness day and night.

* *Huang Dan* (Lead Monoxide / Minium) [1 liang]
* *Zhu Sha* (Cinnabar) [0.5 liang]
* *She Xiang* (Musk) [0.5 liang]
Process: Grind all ingredients finely. Blend with millet rice flour to form mung-bean-sized pills. Dry in shade. On the morning of the onset day, take 5 pills with warm tea. This induces vomiting of phlegm and foul saliva. After vomiting, wait a while, then consume mung bean porridge to cure. Pregnant women must not use.
