Dan zhen (Erythematous rash) refers to generalized swelling, with white dan-like rashes emerging within the muscles, accompanied by slight itching, pain, and swelling. It resembles the red patches appearing during an attack of wind wheals (Yin zhen). There are also cases where the rash rises like a rooster's comb, bright red in color, with a size comparable to a coin. Some may present with blisters.
For treating Chi Dan (Red Dan) and Yin zhen (Wind wheals) characterized by itching, where scratching leads to immediate swelling, use Mang Cao Gao (Mangcao Ointment).
Mang Cao (Radix Daphnes), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xiong Qiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Yang Zhi Zhu (Flos Rhododendri Mollis), Da Ji (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Xi Xin (Herba Asari), Chi Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Yuan Hua (Flos Genkwa), Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata - here specified as raw, peeled, and de-navelled).
The aforementioned herbs are finely chopped and decocted in three jin (approx. 1.5 kg) of lard. Decoct until the Fu Zi turns yellow and the ointment is formed. Filter out the dregs and store in a porcelain box. Apply a small amount to the rash four or five times daily.
For treating Dan zhen with persistent irritability, heat, and pain, use Sheng Ma Gao (Shengma Ointment).
Chuan Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Bai Wei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati), Lou Lu (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), She Xian Cao (Herba Patriniae), Zhi Ke (Fructus Aurantii), Shan Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shuo Di (Herba Polygoni Avicularis).
The aforementioned herbs are finely chopped and decocted in three sheng (approx. 0.6 L) of water and three jin of lard. Decoct until the water vapor is exhausted. Filter out the dregs and store in a porcelain vessel. Apply as needed.
For treating Dan zhen where toxic factors persist and intermittent pain occurs, it is appropriate to use Tuo Lou Lu Tang (Loulu Decoction for Compress Application).
Lou Lu (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae), Chuan Sheng Ma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae), Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae), Shuo Di (Herba Polygoni Avicularis).
The aforementioned herbs are finely chopped and decocted in seven sheng of water until reduced to four sheng. Strain the liquid. Soak a soft cloth in the warm decoction and apply compresses to the affected area. Reheat the cloth when it cools down.

Ling Yang Jiao Xie (Cutis Cornu Saigae Tataricae), three liang.
Decoct one da zhan (approx. 200 ml) of water to obtain two he of concentrated juice. Massage the area hundreds of times. If Saiga antelope horn is unavailable, refined ox fat or pig fat can be used; after cooling, massage the area, which is also effective.
