Postpartum opisthotonos (rigid arching of the back like a bow) is caused by body deficiency and wind invasion, where wind pathogen enters the Yang meridians. The Yin and Yang meridians circulate around the body; the wind pathogen takes advantage of the deficiency to enter.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with symptoms such as opisthotonos, frequent backward extension, and trismus (lockjaw), use Fangfeng San (Saposhnikovia Powder).
Herbs: Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 liang, remove rhizome head), Gegen (Radix Puerariae, 1 liang, sliced), Xiongqiong (Radix Chuanxiong, 1 liang), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 1 liang), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang, remove roots and nodes), Gaoben (Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii, 1 liang).
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a coarse powder and sieving through a coarse sieve. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one zhong zhan (unit of volume) of water until reduced to 60%, strain out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with opisthotonos, stiffness and rigidity of hands and feet, and numbness without sensation, use Duhuo San (Angelica Pubescens Powder).
Herbs: Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, 1 liang), Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 fen), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 liang, remove rhizome head), Gegen (Radix Puerariae, 3 fen, sliced), Qinjiao (Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae, remove seedlings), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis).
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a coarse powder and sieving through a coarse sieve. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one zhong zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger until reduced to 60%, strain out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with body arching like a bow, use Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder).
Herbs: Lingyangjiao Xie (Cornu Saigae Tataricae, 3 fen), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, 1 liang), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 fen, sliced and lightly stir-fried), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 1 liang, remove rhizome head), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome head).
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a fine powder and sieving through a coarse sieve. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one zhong zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger until reduced to 60%, strain out the dregs, and take warm at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with opisthotonos, stiffness and rigidity of hands and feet, and difficulty turning over, use Cezi San (Processed Lateral Root of Aconitum Carmandicum Powder).
Herbs: Cesi (Lateral root of Aconitum carmichaelii, processed, 1 liang, peel and remove umbilicus), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 fen), Gaoben (Rhizoma Ligustici Wallichii, 0.5 liang), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome head), Xixin (Herba Asari, 0.5 liang), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Host, 1 liang), Wu Tou (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata, implied by context "Wu" and processing method, though text is fragmented).
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a fine powder and sieving through a fine sieve, mixing evenly with other ground ingredients. Take 2 qian per dose mixed with warm wine, followed by drinking Congchi Zhou (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Porridge) to induce sweating for efficacy.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with trismus, body arching like a bow, and coma/confusion, use Longnao San (Borneol Powder).
Herbs: Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum or Naturalis, finely ground), Nifen (Calomel), Ganxie (Dryus Full Body, lightly stir-fried), Bai Fan Hui (Alumen Ash, each 1 fen), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Tianxiong (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata, processed, peel and remove umbilicus), Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis Preparata).
Process the above herbs by pounding and sieving into powder, then grinding together in a mortar until uniform. Take 1 qian per dose mixed with warm wine at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with body arching like a bow and dysarthria (slurred speech), use Tianma Wan (Gastrodia Pill).
Herbs: Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), Baifuzi (Rhizoma Typhonii Flagelliformis Preparata, processed and sliced), Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis Preparata, processed), Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Bai Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, lightly stir-fried), Chi Fuling (Poria with Red Host), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, remove rhizome head), Guishuang (Cinnamon Frost/Rhizoma Cinnamomi), Xixin (Herba Asari).
Process the above herbs by pounding and sieving into powder, mixing evenly with ground ingredients, and binding with Huai Jiao (Acacia Gum) boiled paste to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 10 pills per dose dissolved in warm wine at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with trismus, numbness of four limbs, and body arching like a bow, use Qianghuo Infused Wine.
Herbs: Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii, 5 liang), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 5 liang, remove rhizome head), Heidou (Semen Sojae Nigrum, 2 sheng).
Finely slice the herbs, soak Qianghuo and Fangfeng in one dou of good wine overnight in a bottle. Stir-fry Heidou until cooked, add while hot to the wine, stir, seal tightly. After about half a day, boil the sealed bottle in water for half a day. Remove when cool. Drink one zhong zhan warm per dose.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with opisthotonos, trismus, and neck stiffness, use Duhuo Formula.
Herbs: Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis, 1 jin, sliced), Heidou (Semen Sojae Nigrum, 1 sheng).
Soak Duhuo in five sheng of wine for two nights. Then stir-fry Heidou until smoke appears, pour the wine onto the beans, wait for a while, strain out dregs. Take one small cup warm at any time.
For treating postpartum wind-stroke with body arching like a bow, trismus, and mutism, use Chuan Wutou Formula.
Herbs: Chuan Wutou (Radix Aconiti Corneyffianae Preparata, 5 liang, sliced to bean size).
Take half a sheng of Heidou, stir-fry together with Chuan Wutou until half black. Add three da sheng of wine to a pan, stir quickly, filter through silk cloth to obtain the wine. Take one small cup warm.
