On the first day of Shanghan (Cold Damage disease), the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel is affected. The Taiyang channel belongs to the Bladder meridian and is the head of the Three Yang channels; therefore, it is affected first. Its collaterals connect to the waist and spine, and govern the head and neck. Consequently, on the first day of illness, pain in the head, neck, waist, and spine occurs.
