Cough is a symptom of Shanghan (Cold Damage disease), caused by pathogenic heat invading the Lung. When there is heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), the patient will inevitably desire to drink water; if water stagnates in the Xin Xia (epigastric region below the heart), it causes the Lung Qi to float. The Lung governs coughing, and when Water Qi overcomes and invades it, frequent coughing ensues.
For treating cough due to Shanghan, accompanied by shortness of breath, wheezing in the throat, dry cough without sputum, and a sensation of obstruction in the throat as if something were stuck, the Shegan San Formula is appropriate.
Ingredients: Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 1 liang); Xingren (Prunus armeniaca Seed, 3 fen, soaked in decoction, skin and tips removed, double kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow); Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 1 liang, roots and nodes removed); Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 liang, heart removed).
[Note: The original text here appears incomplete or has formatting errors, listing only the above visible parts.]
