Conditions where the toxic qi of Cold Damage (Shanghan) attacks the hands and feet are caused by heat-toxin emerging from within and following the meridians to attack the extremities. The five zang organs, six fu organs, as well as Ying (Nutrient) and Shu (Transporting) acupoints all connect to the fingers and toes; thus, the toxin originates from the internal organs.
For treating Cold Damage where toxic qi attacks the hands and feet, causing swelling, fullness, pain, and mental restlessness, Lianqiao San (Forsythia Powder) is indicated.
